One of the biggest limitations of life simulation games is that NPCs often feel like supporting actors whose only purpose is to react to the player’s actions.

The Co-Player System completely changes this philosophy.

Instead of treating NPCs as background AI, every Zoi should behave as if they are another player living in the same world.

The human player is not the center of the simulation.

They are simply one person among hundreds of other individuals, each living an independent life.

Every NPC Has Their Own Story

Each Zoi should wake up every day with their own objectives, plans, concerns, and ambitions.

They should independently:

  • Decide where to go.

  • Build friendships.

  • Fall in love.

  • Start or end relationships.

  • Have children.

  • Buy or sell homes.

  • Change careers.

  • Make financial decisions.

  • Travel around the city.

  • Learn new skills.

  • Develop hobbies.

  • Pursue long-term dreams.

These decisions should happen naturally, even if the player never interacts with them.

The World Never Stops

The simulation should continue whether or not the player is watching.

While the player is decorating a house, another Zoi might:

  • Get promoted.

  • Lose a job.

  • Meet their future spouse.

  • Have an argument with a friend.

  • Become famous.

  • Move to another neighborhood.

  • Buy a new apartment.

  • Experience a family tragedy.

The player may only discover these events later through conversations, social media, rumors, or chance encounters.

NPCs Should Surprise the Player

Because every NPC makes independent decisions, the world becomes unpredictable.

A best friend might suddenly move away.

A former partner could unexpectedly get married.

A neighbor might become wealthy after starting a successful business.

Someone who was shy could become a famous influencer years later.

These events are never scripted specifically for the player—they emerge naturally from the simulation.

Every NPC Is the Main Character

The philosophy of the Co-Player System is simple:

Every Zoi believes they are the main character of their own life.

The player is not the hero of the world.

Instead, they share the world with hundreds of other protagonists whose stories evolve simultaneously.

A Living Simulation

The ultimate goal is to create a world where the player feels surrounded by other “players” rather than artificial NPCs.

Every relationship, success, failure, friendship, betrayal, and life event emerges from independent decision-making instead of scripted gameplay.

This transforms the game from a traditional life simulator into a living society, where every character has agency, purpose, and a future—even when the player is not there to witness it.

I really like the goal behind this idea—making Zois feel as though they have lives, ambitions, memories and relationships beyond the player would make the world far more immersive. However, I think the proposal underestimates how technically demanding it would be if every Zoi were genuinely simulated as a fully autonomous “AI player.”

Some of the biggest issues would be:

Constant AI decision-making: Hundreds of Zois continuously evaluating their goals, surroundings, emotions, relationships and future plans would require an enormous amount of processing power.

Pathfinding and physical simulation: It is not only about storing what Zois want to do. The game would also need to calculate where they go, how they reach objects, whether routes are blocked and how they interact with other Zois. Pathfinding is already expensive in crowded simulation games.

Animation and object interactions: If every background Zoi physically performed their entire daily routine, the game would need to process countless animations, object reservations and interactions—even in areas the player cannot currently see.

Generative AI costs: If Smart Zoi or language-model-style AI were used for every character, it could not realistically run continuously for hundreds of Zois on a normal PC. Even when a model is shared rather than loaded separately for every character, repeatedly generating decisions would still be extremely demanding.

Logical conflicts: The more independent systems each Zoi has, the more opportunities there are for contradictory behaviour. A Zoi might be assigned work, a family event, a relationship interaction and a personal goal at the same time. The game would need a very strong priority system to prevent chaos.

Save-file growth and memory management: Individual memories are not necessarily very large, but thousands of memories, relationships, preferences, schedules and generated life events across an entire population could eventually make saves slower and more difficult to manage.

Simulation speed: Players often accelerate time. Simulating hundreds of detailed lives at several times normal speed would multiply the workload and could cause severe lag or force the game to simplify behaviour anyway.

Hardware accessibility: inZOI is already demanding. Building the feature around high-end processors or AI-capable graphics cards could exclude a large portion of the player base.

Cloud dependence: Offloading some AI processing to servers could help, but it would introduce latency, server expenses, internet requirements and the possibility that features might stop working if support were discontinued.

Development and testing complexity: Every new career, relationship type, object, location and expansion would need to interact correctly with this system. Testing all possible combinations would be incredibly difficult.

I think a more realistic approach would be a layered simulation system. Zois near the player could receive detailed autonomy, while distant Zois would be updated through simplified schedules, probabilities and occasional life events. The game could record outcomes such as promotions, arguments, friendships or breakups without physically simulating every moment that led to them.

That could create the illusion that every Zoi is living a full life without requiring the computer to run hundreds of complete AI-controlled players at once.

So I support the overall vision, but I do not think the literal version would be practical on regular hardware. A carefully limited and intelligently “faked” version would probably produce better performance, fewer bugs and more believable stories.

I actually agree with many of your technical concerns, but I think there is a misunderstanding about what I’m proposing.

My idea is not that every Zoi should constantly run a full AI simulation every frame, like hundreds of ChatGPT instances playing the game simultaneously.

The idea is a design philosophy, not a specific implementation.

The goal is for every Zoi to feel like another player living in the same world, regardless of how the engine achieves that.

Modern games already use layered simulation systems. Distant NPCs are usually simulated through lightweight background logic, while only nearby characters receive full behavior, animations, pathfinding and object interactions.

That’s exactly the kind of approach I imagine.

For example:

• Nearby Zois could use full AI, detailed schedules, emotions and physical interactions.

• Mid-distance Zois could run simplified decision-making and periodic updates.

• Far-away Zois could evolve through background simulation, generating believable life events like promotions, marriages, moving house, friendships or breakups without physically simulating every second.

The important part isn’t simulating every footstep.

It’s preserving agency, continuity and consequences.

If I meet the same Zoi three years later, I don’t want them to feel frozen in time. I want them to have continued living their own life, changing because of their own experiences rather than because the player was watching.

Games like Dwarf Fortress, RimWorld, Crusader Kings, Shadows of Doubt and even parts of The Sims already use various forms of abstract simulation to create the illusion of living worlds. None of them simulate every action at full fidelity all the time.

I’m suggesting that inZOI could push this philosophy even further.

So I think we’re actually aiming for the same thing.

My post is about how the world should feel from the player’s perspective, while the implementation could absolutely rely on layered simulation, LOD systems, event generation, background progression and other optimizations.

In the end, I don’t want “hundreds of AI players running in real time.”

I want a world where every Zoi feels like they could have their own story—even when I’m not there to witness it.

That’s quite an interesting idea to “bring to life” NPCs. I really like the direction of your thinking, and for a moment I even imagined what it would all look like, but let’s come back down to earth :wink: At the moment, we have a limited amount of housing suitable for living in the cities of the Inzoi world, and hopefully this amount will increase over time. The thing is that some of them are occupied by NPC families, and available building plots will remain empty if the player doesn’t build a house there for their family to live in. But as soon as that family moves away, the building disappears and it becomes an empty building plot again that’s inaccessible to NPCs. Okay, an NPC bachelor moves into an apartment, and he will remain alone until his death — sad. Another example — an NPC family with children living in the city — the parents aged over time and passed away, and their grown children never started a family. They have no chance to have children. As they age, they will also disappear, and then the game will settle a new NPC family in their house. The maximum that NPC families living in the city are capable of is having children, and then… these children grow up and the process repeats itself :worried: Well, as they say, we have what we have. I really want to believe that in the future, NPCs living in cities will learn not only to have children, but will also be able to find jobs, get married, and do many other things that will make the gameplay more diverse and interesting.

I agree that this would be amazing, but I don’t think something like that can be run in an everyday computer.

For example, once the game has generated the nearby zois personalities, goals, etc. what does it do with that information? It either keeps it running in the background so that next time you meet this zoi they’re exaclty the same, or wipes it and regenerates it next time that zoi is in your vicinity.

First option could be too taxing on your computer, second option would be completely immersion breaking.
