Make Vehicles Feel Alive: Real Parking, NPC Drivers, and Better Traffic

I’d love to see the traffic system become much more realistic in future updates.

One feature that many players have already requested is being able to park our cars and leave them where we parked them instead of having them instantly disappear or magically appear with the remote. It would make the world feel much more immersive.

I’d also love to see NPCs interact with vehicles in a more believable way. For example:

  • Cars could honk if the player blocks the road or stops in the middle of traffic.
  • Drivers could react to traffic by changing lanes, waiting, or carefully driving around obstacles when possible.
  • NPCs could park their cars, get out, continue on foot, then later return to their parked vehicle and drive away instead of appearing or disappearing with their cars.
  • NPCs could also use bicycles, electric scooters, and buses, making the city feel much more alive.

It would also be great to see buses stopping at bus stops with NPCs getting on and off, and even being able to interact with them while they’re waiting.

Another thing that breaks immersion is the automatic driving system. When we arrive at our destination, the car simply stops in the middle of the road, and we have to make it disappear with the remote. It would feel much more natural if the car automatically found a nearby parking space, parked there, and stayed in the world until we returned to use it again.

More than simply adding new vehicles, I’d love to see the entire traffic system behave in a more believable way. The goal isn’t just to have more traffic, but to create a living, believable, and interactive traffic ecosystem that makes every city feel truly alive.

I love this Idea so much, especially on the making buses more alive with people and kids waiting for the bus to pick them up, NPC smart driving behavior and a more detailed parking system :+1:t6: But what I would love to see is bigger vehicles like Trucks :delivery_truck: that pick-up garbage or even much more

I agree too :+1:

I agree. Especially the NPC drivers need a rework. In my Bliss Bay save file, there is one particular crossroad that is permanently blocked by cars. They just clog the whole road. Makes me wonder how they even got their license.

Some small traffic rules would also be cool, but I would make it an extra setting to turn on or off, since it’s not for all players. Per example indicators, actual speed limits (like when we drive past the school), taking red lights and so on. So far the only consequence for bad driving was when I ran over a pedestrian.

I’m not sure, if we will actually get functioning bus stops, since they would need a set schedule on when they depart and it might be a hassle to adjust and program. Especially if you want to take the bus to work, but the bus only arrives in 20 minutes, which might make you arrive late for work, because the schedule cannot cover every possible time window for every job, meeting etc. The NPCs would potentially need adjustments as well. I can see that some players wouldn’t want that.

I agree with that too. These cars still don’t seem to have real autonomy. Sometimes it feels like they’re just filling up the roads instead of actually driving intelligently.

I totally agree. Everything that needs to be written. Although I would like to complement your idea with the following: that traffic in cities is fake now - that is, the Zois are ordinary random dummies in the car, and not residents of a particular city. In other words, Zois living in the city should have their own vehicles, otherwise for some reason all NPCs walk the streets and no one has personal transport. When traveling around the city, I would like to meet my friends, colleagues, and relatives on bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles, and cars. You can also stand with them at traffic lights or in traffic jams.

I agree! Exactly. This is something I would really like to see too :+1:
