Happy Friday!

I am writing from Shanghai as I’ll be attending the TapTap Game Fest tomorrow, which I briefly mentioned in a previous post. At this event, we plan to showcase our multiplayer capabilities as well as the ‘MyHome’ feature in a brand new game mode called ‘Canvastown,’ which a small team from our studio has been developing step by step. The name ‘Canvastown’ represents the idea of you and I living together in a creator’s village.

We want to make sure your expectations are properly managed, as features like building an entire city from scratch or laying down roads—as rumored online—are not available yet. Of course, we plan to continue developing features to help decorate your city and edit terrain in the future. Right now, it’s just a side project, and we are very much focused on our core goals.

The main goal of Canvastown is get away from mundane daily life and capture memorable moments within life simulation so you can jump in and enjoy only those extraordinary moments. It’s also where you can craft interesting storylines, participate in a set role, and live out their lives.

The attached video shows a brief concept: players go online, enter pre-made scenarios through “AR Company” to participate in a set role. In our dedicated online space, around 50 people can converse and interact in the same channel under mutual consent. The NPC Zois behave according to their roles we’ve assigned. Like a movie director, you can assign roles and cast your actors to create your scenario. I often wondered if doing this would’ve been me reinventing the wheel (doing unnecessary work) since players usually prefer familiar gameplay.

To further support this gameplay, we’ll be providing script mods so that small features to help enliven your story can be implemented. Using mods, we were able to create mini-games like car racing—though it’s admittedly a lesser experience than dedicated racing games. We want to create a flow where these mini-games intended for Canvastown can later be added to the main game as well.

I believe that the biggest joy of playing RP (role playing) games isn’t to “clear a game,” but rather have a world where you simply coexist with other people. That was the origin for the creation of ‘AR Company.’ I’ve been pitching my concept where players can, for one moment, step away from reality into this world of inZOI where they can live out a different life. Thinking of the movie ‘Ready Player One’ might make it easier for you to visualize.

Of course, looking at the current build makes me sigh. There are so many lacking areas, and we have a very long way to go. But someday, I hope to bring this dream of mine to life.

I want to merely provide a solid foundation, and I want it to be you who will be writing the stories upon it. By allowing you the space to create unpredictable situations and social interactions, it may take time, but I do foresee where that can become a living, breathing world.

I am quite introverted and dislike stepping outside my house, but when it comes to game development, I am particularly outgoing when it comes to the challenges of creating something new. However, just last Sunday when I added kimchi as an ingredient to my pasta and nervously checked my beloved wife’s expression to see if she liked it, I have a similar anxiety for tomorrow’s event.

Some say it’s good to take on new challenges rather than playing it safe, but unlike in games, reality comes with people’s evaluations, criticisms, and sometimes applause, which makes it scary for me. I told the company that I would decide the future of Canvastown based on the event’s outcome. It might go well, or many shortcomings might be exposed, but I believe it’s a necessary process to move forward to the next step.

I hope to write to you all with good news.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for always supporting us.

Hoping that one day we can live life like a game,
From Shanghai ~ kjun

### _Kjun’s Reply to Your Comments_

Hello everyone,

Having safely returned from our event in China, I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude to all our players. Meeting inZOI users in person at the venue was truly meaningful and delightful. At the same time, showing a build of ‘inZOI Canvas Town’ that wasn’t as polished as I had hoped due to limited time and venue conditions left me both grateful and deeply apologetic.

### Event Demo & Multiplayer Clarifications

inZOI is actively being developed with the goal of becoming an online life simulation where players gather and live together in a town. However, given the event constraints, we felt it would be difficult to properly convey this core structure in a short window. As a result, we focused the demo on mod support and select story-save features.

This led to several misunderstandings. To clarify: in our upcoming small-scale tests, we plan to evaluate whether the experience of playing together in a town with other players offers genuine value. Focusing our video content around the China event caused confusion, and part of this was a misjudgment on my part as a developer.

### Building inZOI Together

To be frank, the hardest part of game development is deciding a direction that the public will love. I am not a developer who intuitively knows exactly what players want at a glance. I deeply respect and envy those with that instinct, but it is a talent I lack. However, I genuinely love the process of making games, and that passion is what shaped inZOI into what it is today. I am convinced that the right path forward for inZOI is to continuously communicate with you, test features together, and discover long-term fun through your feedback.

### Attached Video & Current Multiplayer Features

The attached video showcases a preview of a new city currently in development. We are designing it so that all lots—with the exception of roadways—are fully editable. Since roads and certain elements cannot be completely removed yet, we are currently exploring ways to provide a dedicated editor. Additionally, to verify existing features in a multiplayer environment, we are testing these capabilities on the ‘Dowon’ map as well.

Here are the main multiplayer features we are actively developing and testing:

- Multi-story residential housing system

- Support for 20+ players residing simultaneously in a single town

- Door locking and visitor eviction mechanics

- Simultaneous house building by multiple players

- Multiplayer verification for existing core inZOI features

- Forming relationships by attending parties and earning income through careers

(During today’s playtest, we identified an issue where non-family characters could not board vehicles together. We are actively tracking down and resolving bugs like this.)

### Single-Player Priorities & October Update

Please rest assured about our single-player experience: the vast majority of our development team remains dedicated to single-player, which serves as the foundation for everything we build. Only a small dedicated team handles the process of adapting these systems for multiplayer.

We are preparing an update for October. This update will introduce modding capabilities, implement daily routines for Zois (living, working, and returning home), and provide features allowing you to edit these daily schedules directly.

Reflecting on the flight back, I felt fortunate that our team has built a flexible framework allowing us to test the game in diverse ways. Because I know my own limitations in predicting what everyone will love, we will continue running multiple small-scale tests to improve the game step-by-step alongside your feedback.

I will follow up with another update this Friday. Thank you always for your patience, support, and trust.

Sincerely,

kjun

Canvastown might honestly be one of the things I’m most excited about in inZOI! The idea of being able to actually write something and have NPCs respond naturally, each with their own personality, feels like such a big step for life sims. And then having real players living in the same world? That could make everything feel so much more alive.

I really hope we’ll be able to meet people we don’t know, from anywhere in the world, and simply exist in the same map as neighbors—crossing paths, chatting, helping each other, and maybe even creating our own stories together. I really hope it won’t be limited to playing with friends, because I don’t know anyone around me who plays inZOI! An automatic translator built into the game would be amazing for this too.

And I’m really happy about the mini-games! I’d love to be able to randomly challenge other players to little mini-games from time to time, just for fun and to enjoy something completely different from our usual stories. Sometimes you don’t want everything to be serious—you just want to have a silly little competition with someone you happened to meet and then go back to your own life. I think those spontaneous interactions could make the world feel even more alive.

What I love most is the freedom behind all of this: you can enjoy your own little life and your own stories, then choose to connect with other players whenever you feel like it. For people who sometimes feel lonely, that could make Canvastown feel like a really comforting little place to escape to.

With players creating their own worlds, characters and stories, it feels like there could be almost no limit to what we’ll be able to experience. Thank you for creating this! I have a feeling Canvastown is going to steal me away from the main cities… 🩷

I have to be honest. I am a little disappointed with what you’ve shown of Canvastown so far. I don’t have any interest in multiplayer, creating a personal avatar, or having in-depth conversations with NPCs. One of the limitations of inzoi’s main gameplay is that many of the buildings in each town are shell buildings that cannot be edited in any way. This means that the player has limited control over the overall aesthetic of the town. I was hoping canvastown would address this limitation by providing a town in which all buildings could be chosen, created and edited by the player, while maintaining the main gameplay loop of overseeing multiple zois. I am sure that many players will appreciate your current vision for canvastown but I personally have no interest in it.

I have been longingly waiting for Canvastown since June, and something completely different was promised. There is no world where I feel truly comfortable. I can’t play my Scottish clan because they don’t fit in anywhere. You can’t customize the worlds to match your playstyle. I want a European town with forests and nature, and a neighborhood where everyone lives close together. I want to be able to build my own world. I am so disappointed…

My honest opinion about Canvas Town is that it won’t be what I was expecting. As someone mentioned before, I thought we would have smaller maps, but with the possibility of editing all the buildings from scratch. I also thought we could have several different maps—one with a beach, one without a beach, another with snow, and so on.
I expected the experience to be more like co-op, where players who joined could have their own houses on the same map instead of just visiting. Maybe it’s a feature I won’t use much in the future.

Hello Kjun and team. Thanks for the update.

I have to admit this reveal disappointed me quite a lot.

The reason I was excited for Canvastown was not multiplayer or mini-games. I was hoping it would finally give us something the existing cities cannot: a highly customizable world where we could choose the buildings, shape the landscape, decide the overall architectural style and create a town that actually fits the stories we want to tell.

That expectation also did not come from nowhere. Earlier descriptions of Canvastown and the roadmap made it sound much more like a small customizable village, and for months people have been discussing blank maps, terrain tools, editable roads and fully player-built towns.

The online roleplay concept may appeal to some players, and I don’t want to take that away from them, but for me it now feels like Canvastown and multiplayer are increasingly becoming the same thing: avatars, shared online spaces, scenarios and mini-games.

What I really wanted was the opposite — more control over the actual life-simulation world.

I would much rather have a smaller single-player or optional co-op town where every lot is editable, the visual theme can be changed, terrain can eventually be shaped and we can populate it with our own Zois and families.

If those world-building tools are still planned for Canvastown later, I really hope they remain a major part of the feature rather than becoming secondary to the online RP hub.

I bought inZOI because I want a deep life simulator. I don’t personally need it to also become a social MMO or a collection of smaller versions of racing games and other genres.

But I’m sure there will be an audience for this type of canvastown too.

Have a nice weekend everyone 🍀

**Thanks for the update, but unfortunately it’s something I probably won’t use.** The whole multiplayer idea in inZoi really puts me off – I feel like it could just ruin it, honestly. It would be great if you focus on the basics, keep making the game better and just let it stay single-player. Anyway, big thanks for all the work you do and everything you’re putting into the game – I’ll definitely keep following the updates.

I was really excited about the multiplayer mode!

I was interested in VRChat, but I was hesitant because it seemed like there was a high barrier to entry.

But with this inZOI CanvasTown, it seems like I can play casually with my friends!

I’d love to take lots of photos with my friends, so I’d be happy if you could enhance the photo features.

For example, I’d appreciate it if there were two-person poses like linking arms or holding hands together, and a feature that lets you look directly at the camera.

I’m really looking forward to the day I can play!!

To be honest, I don’t have much particular interest in Canvastown, though I’m not opposed to it either.

Although Kjun made it clear that there’s another team responsible for Canvastown and it won’t affect the progress of the game itself, I think that’s just something they say to placate people. If that team were used to develop the game itself, I believe the game would progress much faster.

Sigh, multiplayer gameplay… It was never really the driving force behind my choice to play a “life simulation” game in the first place. Otherwise, why wouldn’t I just play an online game? Wouldn’t making friends in an online game be easier?

This mode makes me feel like it’s something separate from the game itself. I’ll probably take a look at it initially, but then focus back on single-player mode. Any amount of additional content beyond that would feel like a waste for me. It even makes me feel like half of INZOI’s content is something I don’t like (mainly the online half). Actually, whenever I see a single-player game that contains “online game content”, I would absolutely not buy it 😅

I still hope they’ll put more effort into ‘offline’ content 🤣
There are still so many BUGs to fix in offline mode, and so many features that could be developed further. The personality system could be deepened and expanded, emotional interactions between friends, various holiday events or collectibles, meaningful quests, heart-fluttering interactions, intriguing and mysterious stories, and much more.

</div>

Hmm… I was counting on maps for development. I dream of a small European-style town that I could create from scratch. I definitely won’t use the multiplayer type, and the need to type out everything my character says every time doesn’t appeal to me either.

What we saw should be a separate game.

I’m not sure of everything you are planning behind the scenes. If are planning to introduce a “create a town” feature, like the one you showed us originally, it needs to be a part of the “main game”. The players who were excited about the “create a town” feature are not necessarily the same players who were excited about multiplayer or role-playing experiences. We do not want a role-playing experience in a town we have made. we want the same gameplay loop that we have enjoyed so far, in a town we have created. We want to be able to play any of the zois we have placed in the town we have designed and even have zois travel from the town we have created to existing cities.

@RestlessSloth I second this. Even if at some point we can create a town in that CanvasTown mode/hub, I don’t want to be able to just walk with my created avatar or use it online, but to move my own created families there with the same gameplay the regular offline mode has.

It’s an exciting idea! Not only for what it can bring now but also in the future. A new social gaming system that many of us have been waiting for decades will be born. I’m very excited and although this is just the beginning and everything is still being discovered, it’s great news.

It would be great if at some point we could design our own city oriented towards what we like: whether we want to recreate other cities and put them at the service of other players, with their own rules and policies, or if we simply want to transfer them to the base game.

I understand that if we have the possibility to modify these cities at some point, we’ll be able to keep many player profiles happy — those single players who want to edit their city, those who only want to play cooperatively, and those who want an immersive MMO world.

As you’ve explained well, it’s also great that all of this are independent projects that are being tested and developed through trial and error.

Perhaps the only thing I’m not entirely sold on is the minigames. That’s fine if you want to do something with another neighbor at a specific moment, but I think it fits more into the topic of actions like being able to go to an amusement park rather than gameplay mechanics.

I also think the development and training of AI in this game mode is very important, which will obviously have a positive impact on the original base game by being able to transfer knowledge and experience.

I think it’s a great project and although right now it doesn’t look complete and has a lot of potential in the future, especially as technology changes and improves. It could become a very immersive universe that would also help improve Inzoi’s gameplay system, especially because games are not comparable when they first come out versus a few years later when they improve so much.

For me it’s not a disappointment at all, it’s a great step forward and I encourage the team developing it to keep doing this great work so they can continue releasing tools and ideas that will surely improve this project overall 🫶

In previous roadmap presentations, Canvastown was shown as 2 small town maps similar to European villages. But now Canvastown has become the entrance to multiplayer mode, which really caught me off guard…
But anyway, I still wish you all the best. After all, The Sims-style gameplay + Roblox-style gaming + AI features do look quite appealing at first glance.

This is what Kjun said in this older Brainstorm, where Canvastown was mentioned a few months ago… And now it is an online mode with RP and one controllable avatar. So they basically put this together with the “Fate Engine” that was also discussed back then…

That’s why so many of us expected it to be a customizable town alongside the existing ones.

The distance between contents became too far, leaving many empty spaces. And when we tried to add new plots or shops, optimization issues appeared. Thanks but I’m not interested in this either, I wanted a “world creator” and an excavator, and I also prefer that these features stay in a separate pack, it’s not okay with me that it’s optional and that if you don’t want it you don’t play it, no. Whoever wants it can buy and/or install it as “cahaya”, I don’t want to install the code and files for this on my PC, so I hope please 🙏 that what’s optional is installing it.
