Crash in runnable thread Background Worker #20

Looks like your system ran out of RAM while running the game. Do you have any programs running in the background while you play? With 16 GB RAM, I highly recommend you close all other programs while playing InZoi.

Also, make sure that your RAM isn’t damaged:
Go to Settings > System, scroll down to “About” and click that, find the Device Specifications: Installed RAM section, then see what number is before “usable”.

The usable RAM number is typically a little lower than full capacity (e.g., I have 32.0 GB RAM installed, with 31.7 usable), but if that number is significantly lower, that means your RAM might be damaged.

I’d also recommend you (just in case):

  1. Verify your game files on Steam

  2. Make sure your Graphics Driver is updated

  3. Test the game without clothing mods, as these mods are often unstable at this stage of the game, and, depending on how many you have downloaded, it may be overloading your system.

Edit: Oh, I just realized that your post is translated from Spanish, but just go into your computer’s system settings and find the equivalent sections. I’m not sure what they would be if your computer’s language is in Spanish.

Hello there,

I run this error through chatgpt to see if I could be of any help to you, this is what is telling me the cause can be + some recommended fixes:

(the issue seems to be the system’s physical memory is already full (from the game + background processes).

:puzzle_piece: What Happened

The engine ran out of available memory while trying to allocate just 0.2 MB (253,952 bytes).
Even though that’s a small amount, the system couldn’t provide it because both RAM and virtual memory (paging file) were exhausted or unavailable.

The key line is:

Ran out of memory allocating 253952 (0.2 MiB) bytes with alignment 0.
Last error msg: The paging file is too small to complete the operation.

That last part tells us exactly why:
:right_arrow: Windows’ virtual memory (paging file) is too small or disabled.

:brain: Root Causes

  1. Not enough free RAM

    • The system’s physical memory is already full (from the game + background processes).
  2. Paging file (virtual memory) too small or disabled

    • Windows uses the paging file as “overflow” memory on disk. If it’s too small, apps can crash.
  3. Memory leak or heavy usage inside Unreal Engine

    • Sometimes background threads (like “Background Worker #20”) can keep allocating memory.
  4. Corrupted shaders or assets

    • If the crash repeats at the same point, it could be asset-related.

:toolbox: How to Fix It

1. Increase the Paging File Size

  1. Press Win + R, type sysdm.cpl → press Enter.

  2. Go to Advanced → Performance → Settings → Advanced → Virtual Memory → Change…

  3. Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives”.

  4. Select your system drive (usually C:).

  5. Choose Custom size and set:

    • Initial size: about 1.5Ă— your RAM

    • Maximum size: about 3Ă— your RAM

  6. Click Set, then OK, restart the PC.

(Example: If you have 16 GB RAM → Initial = 24576 MB, Max = 49152 MB)

2. Close Background Apps

  • Close browsers, Discord, or recording software before running the game.

3. Verify Game Files

  • If this is from Steam, Epic, etc., use “Verify integrity of game files” to check for corrupted content.

4. Lower In-Game Settings

  • Reduce texture quality, shadows, or resolution to reduce memory load.

5. Check for Memory Leaks

  • If this happens over time (after long play sessions), the game may be leaking memory — restarting occasionally can prevent the buildup.

:warning: If It Still Crashes:

  • Check the folder:

    %LOCALAPPDATA%\ZOI\Saved\Logs

Open the latest .log file and search for “Out of memory” or “Fatal error”.
That can pinpoint which asset or subsystem (textures, audio, etc.) was loading when it failed.

Thank you very much for the recommendations. They were applied, and I observed that it was only using 16000 MB. I still don’t understand the reason since the game was running perfectly from its purchase in March until June when it started crashing. Thinking it was the mods, I disabled them. The graphic quality was reduced to intermediate, even though the card still recommends that it can be set to ultra. The background antivirus is silent for the game. I managed to open a game, and it closed shortly after. At least the RAM consumption was detected. I requested a review from Nvidia support and Alienware. Waiting.

I’m glad if it was helpful at all! Hope you get answer from Nvidia and are able to fix it soon

Good luck!

Hello @renakamura2000 , in fact, since March there was many updates with new contents and gameplay, the Modkit etc, so the game is more resource-intensive, both in terms of graphics and processor power.

Did you have an answer from Nvidia ? Since the last update, do you still have problem ?
