Story Mode: STORY CONTRACT

STORY CONTRACT / GUIDED STORY

The idea is not to have an AI that writes a complete story, nor an “invisible director” that controls everything. Instead, the system works as a narrative simulation layer on top of the sandbox. This allows unique stories to emerge naturally, without needing a fixed script or full AI control.

The game remains completely free, but gains a dynamic context system that makes the world react in a more intelligent way to what happens.

Core idea: Reactive world, not scripted story

Instead of creating a predefined story, the system generates:

  • probable situations

  • social consequences

  • emergent events

  • reputation changes

  • evolving relationships

In other words, it doesn’t decide “what will happen”, it only increases the probability of certain types of events occurring.

Story Contracts (optional mode)

The player chooses a theme, such as:

  • Royal romance

  • Fame and celebrity life

  • Business rise

  • Chaotic/dramatic life

  • Modern royalty

This is not a script. It’s a simulation filter.

It only adjusts the world to generate more situations of that type.

More alive NPCs

Each NPC would have:

  • memory of important events

  • simple personal goals

  • persistent relationships

  • opinions about other NPCs

This creates stories without scripted events.

Example:

  • someone cheats → the other NPC remembers it later

  • rumors spread → reputation changes

  • friendships slowly turn into rivalries

Reactive world

The world records what happens:

  • newspaper headlines

  • social rumors

  • public reputation

  • city-wide events

But everything is based on real simulation outcomes, not pre-written scenes.

No narrative control

The system would never:

  • force specific romances

  • create impossible events just to follow a story

  • remove player freedom

If the player ignores everything and just drives around the city, that still becomes their story.

Main goal

It’s not about creating a scripted series inside the game.

It’s about making sure that:

  • the sandbox feels alive

  • actions have social consequences

  • stories emerge naturally from simulation

Every save remains fully free, but now:

  • the world remembers

  • the world reacts

  • the world evolves

A World That Reacts

The Story Contract is not a story mode or a fixed narrative. It is a system where the player chooses only the overall direction of the world, and the simulation organically generates situations from it.

Instead of controlling a storyline, the player shapes the social environment where stories naturally emerge.

World Direction

At the start of each save, the player chooses a “social climate” for the city.

Examples:

  • Royal Romance

  • Celebrity Life

  • Business Empire

  • Social Drama

  • Modern Royalty

  • Urban Chaos

  • High Competition

This does not create scripted events or fixed storylines. It only changes how society behaves.

Atmosphere System

The city is defined by global values that influence all NPCs:

  • Romance

  • Jealousy

  • Ambition

  • Crime

  • Education

  • Fame

  • Tradition

These values do not directly create stories — they shape how stories unfold.

Examples:

  • High Ambition → more rivalry, promotions, and social competition

  • High Romance → more relationships and emotional connections

  • High Jealousy → more emotional conflicts and breakups

  • Low Education → more impulsive and chaotic behavior

Emergent NPC Behavior

NPCs do not need complex hidden goals.

Each one has only a simple behavioral direction, visible through actions:

  • career

  • relationships

  • social status

  • stability

  • impulsiveness

The player never directly sees the internal system, but understands it through behavior:

  • frequent job changes

  • pursuit of social status

  • avoidance of conflict

  • tendency toward drama or stability

A World That Reacts and Informs

The world does not just simulate — it communicates what is happening:

  • in-game newspapers

  • social media feeds

  • NPC rumors

  • dynamic conversations

  • public reputation

Events are not hidden. The world comments, spreads, and reacts to them.

Reputation and Consequences

The actions of both the player and NPCs create ongoing social impact.

Examples:

  • scandals change social relationships

  • achievements unlock new opportunities

  • influential families reshape city dynamics

  • past decisions affect future interactions

The world has memory.

Power and Influence

Influential families and NPCs do not have “magical power”.

Their influence is shown through real systems:

  • access to exclusive events

  • stronger social networks

  • inherited opportunities

  • persistent reputation

  • different treatment from other NPCs

The difference between new wealth and a generational dynasty is visible through social behavior.

Final Result

The Story Contract does not create stories.

It creates social conditions.

Stories emerge from the interaction between:

  • NPC personalities

  • city atmosphere

  • player reputation

  • world memory

  • emergent choices

Each save becomes a unique simulation, with no predefined script, where the world reacts, evolves, and generates context for completely different experiences.

The goal is not for AI to tell a story.

It is to make the world feel alive enough to generate stories on its own, through consistent social systems, memory, and consequences.

STORY CONTRACT / GUIDED STORY system inside inZOI — like a “Netflix + Sims + AI narrative mode.”

║ ▶ START YOUR LIFE ║
║ “THE WORLD WILL REACT” ║
╚══════════════════════════════════════╝

Before starting the save, the player writes:

  • the type of story

  • the main romance

  • the drama

  • the goals

  • the tone of the gameplay

  • what CAN or CANNOT happen

And the game’s AI adapts the entire world to match that vibe.

Like you writing:

“I want a story inspired by famous 90s romances. A man from a powerful, wealthy family falls in love with an elegant and mysterious woman. They face media pressure, paparazzi, and society expectations, but they remain deeply in love.”

And then the game starts generating:

  • events

  • dialogues

  • encounters

  • paparazzi moments

  • luxury parties

  • rumors

  • interviews

  • family conflicts

automatically :sob:

EXAMPLE SAVE

Inspired by the story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette, but without the tragic ending.

You could define:

STORY RULES

  • no tragic deaths

  • main romance is mandatory

  • aggressive paparazzi

  • worldwide fame

  • media wedding

  • family pressure

  • possible scandals

  • jealousy and rumors

“WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN” SYSTEM

You would write things like:

  • “I want a secret wedding.”

  • “I want possible cheating.”

  • “I want obsessive media coverage.”

  • “I want a happy ending.”

  • “No one is allowed to die.”

  • “Emotional drama, but not toxic.”

And the game’s AI would naturally create situations that lead toward those directions.

MAIN CHARACTER SYSTEM

You could choose:

  • political heir

  • celebrity

  • model

  • businesswoman

  • princess

  • famous artist

And NPCs would react differently.

For example, a famous heir would have:

  • bodyguards

  • photographers

  • fans

  • family pressure

  • interviews

  • constant rumors

DYNAMIC PAPARAZZI SYSTEM

This fits your idea perfectly.

If the couple:

  • argues in public

  • runs away together

  • is seen secretly meeting

  • disappears from the media

journalists would start:

  • investigating

  • publishing rumors

  • following cars

  • taking hidden photos

And depending on the outcome:

  • reputation rises or drops

  • brands cancel contracts

  • fans defend the couple

  • families get involved in conflicts

AI-SHAPED STORYTELLING

The most revolutionary part is that the game wouldn’t follow a fixed script.

It understands the “theme” of your story and improvises.

So even the player wouldn’t fully know what will happen

For example, if you want:

“luxurious, dramatic romance”

The AI might generate:

  • a jealous ex

  • political scandal

  • media obsession

  • fake friendship betrayal

  • leaked photos

  • unexpected pregnancy

  • secret wedding in another country

All based on the narrative style you chose.

STORIES INSPIRED BY FILMS / SERIES

This would also be perfect.

You could create saves inspired by:

  • royalty

  • old money families

  • celebrities

  • forbidden romance

  • enemies to lovers

  • arranged marriage

  • business empires

  • pop stars

  • supermodels

  • powerful dynasties

And the game would adapt:

  • NPC behavior

  • cities

  • events

  • social atmosphere

  • news headlines

  • public reactions

NO FIXED ENDING SYSTEM

This is the best part.

You define:

  • the beginning

  • the story style

But NOT the ending.

So the game evolves based on:

  • choices

  • lies

  • relationships

  • reputation

  • emotions

  • AI behavior of the Zois

And every playthrough becomes literally like a Netflix series :sob:

AI-driven storytelling: EXEMPLE THE STORY

The player could set a story premise, and the game would generate dynamic events, relationships, and missions to naturally build that narrative inside the world. 1. “Gray” social system

No predictable relationships. NPCs would have secrets, jealousy, ambitions, and could even betray or sabotage friendships, creating real social chaos.

THE PEOPLE’S PRINCESS

A fictional story inspired by the emotional legacy of Princess Diana

THE KINGDOM OF VALORIA

The Kingdom of Valoria was known for its impeccable traditions, lavish royal balls, and the most closely watched royal family in Europe.

But behind the golden palace walls stood a monarchy that was cold, rigid, and obsessed with appearances.

Until one young woman changed everything.

Her name was Lady Elena Laurent.

Beautiful, kind, and full of life, Elena was never born to be queen. She came from a lesser noble family, but she was known for her enormous heart, natural charisma, and the way she treated everyone as an equal.

When Prince Adrian of Valoria—the heir to the throne—announced his engagement to Elena, the entire kingdom instantly fell in love with her.

She seemed like a living fairy tale.

But fairy tales do not always end happily.

THE ROYAL WEDDING

The wedding was broadcast around the world.

Millions watched Elena walk into the Royal Cathedral wearing a delicate gown covered in pearls.

People cried.

She smiled nervously.

And in that moment, Valoria believed it had found its future “People’s Princess.”

For a while, everything seemed perfect.

Elena visited hospitals. She hugged children. She spoke with the elderly. She broke royal protocol simply to help ordinary people.

She became more beloved than any member of the royal family.

And that began to trouble the palace.

THE GOLDEN PRISON

Behind closed doors, Elena lived a very different reality.

The royal court criticized her clothes. Her emotions. Her spontaneous nature. Her humanity.

Prince Adrian loved Elena, but he was weak in the face of royal pressure.

The newspapers began creating rumors. Scandals. Cruel gossip.

Every tear shed by the princess became a headline.

Every public appearance became a judgment.

Even so, Elena continued smiling for the people.

Because she knew that many saw hope in her.

THE SEPARATION

Years later, the royal marriage began to crumble before the eyes of the world.

The media followed every detail.

While the palace fought to protect the monarchy’s image, Elena began to find her own voice.

She devoted herself to humanitarian causes:

  • Mental health awareness

  • Abandoned children

  • Victims of war

  • Women in vulnerable situations

For the first time, Elena was no longer simply “the heir’s wife.”

She became a symbol.

An icon.

A free woman.

THE PEOPLE CHOOSE HER

Even after separating from the royal family, Elena remained the most beloved person in the kingdom.

Crowds shouted her name.

Young people copied her style.

Mothers taught their daughters to be kind “like Princess Elena.”

But fame also brought persecution.

Photographers followed her every step. Helicopters hovered above her home. Cars chased her wherever she went.

Elena often told friends that she missed peace.

Even surrounded by millions of people, she felt alone.

A NEW LIFE

Over time, Elena met Noah Bellamy.

A documentary photographer involved in humanitarian projects.

Unlike everyone else around her, Noah was not impressed by royal titles.

He saw Elena as a woman.

Not as a symbol.

The two began traveling together.

Far from the palace, Elena finally seemed happy.

Newspapers said she was “being reborn.”

For the first time in many years, she laughed genuinely.

THE NIGHT THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

On a rainy night in Valoria, Elena and Noah left a charity event while trying to escape the paparazzi.

Cars began chasing them through the streets.

But unlike the story the world expected to repeat…

destiny changed.

The driver lost control near an old bridge.

The car skidded.

Sirens arrived within minutes.

The entire kingdom was in shock.

Hours later, newspapers announced:

“Princess Elena Survives.”

She had been seriously injured.

She disappeared from public life for months.

And in that silence…

something inside her changed.

THE PRINCESS VANISHES

Without informing the press, Elena gave up her remaining royal titles.

She left Valoria.

For two years, nobody knew where she was.

Some claimed she was living on an island.

Others believed she was hiding in Italy.

The truth was much simpler.

Elena was traveling across the world, anonymously helping humanitarian projects.

No crowns.

No luxury gowns.

No photographers.

Just Elena.

THE RETURN OF THE PEOPLE’S PRINCESS

Two years later, during an international humanitarian crisis, a woman appeared helping refugee children.

A photograph went viral.

It was her.

Older.

Stronger.

Freer.

The world went wild.

Elena returned to Valoria not as a princess of the monarchy…

but as the people’s princess.

Thousands filled the streets to welcome her home.

This time, she wore no crown.

Only a simple white dress.

And yet…

she seemed more powerful than any queen.

THE END

Years later, the king passed away.

Prince Adrian ascended the throne but did something unexpected:

He officially established the Elena Foundation.

A global institution dedicated to mental health, humanitarian aid, and child protection.

During its inauguration, Adrian said:

“The monarchy taught rules. Elena taught humanity.”

At the end of the ceremony, Elena quietly appeared at the back of the crowd.

No announcement.

No security.

People slowly began to recognize her.

A child ran up to her and asked:

“Are you still a princess?”

Elena smiled, her eyes filled with emotion.

And she replied:

“I don’t need a crown to love my people.”

And in that moment…

the entire kingdom realized:

she had never stopped being the true princess.

MEMORABLE QUOTES

“She was not born to follow rules. She was born to touch hearts.”

“The people did not love her position. They loved her soul.”

“Some women change history without ever needing a throne.”

“True royalty is found in empathy.”

“She lost the palace… but gained the world.”

1. Variable Destiny System

Each Zoi would have:

A main dream (e.g., becoming a K-pop idol)
A hidden destiny trait (luck, bad luck, raw talent, natural charisma, family pressure, etc.)
The cultural context of their city

Example in Gangnam (inspired by Dowon):

Zoi A – “Prodigy”

  • Trains hard

  • Passes auditions

  • Joins a group

  • Successfully debuts

  • May become a global star

Zoi B – “Almost There”

  • Trains just as hard

  • Reaches the final audition round

  • Gets rejected for “not fitting the concept”

Can then:

  • Become an underground solo artist

  • Become a music producer

  • Quit and completely change their life

Same goal. Completely different outcomes.

2. Life Ending System

It wouldn’t be limited to death or old age.

It could include endings such as:

Ending: Global Icon
Ending: Niche Artist
Ending: Unfulfilled Dream
Ending: Radical Career Change
Ending: Founder of a Business Empire

At the end of the game, it could display something like:

“In this timeline, your Zoi impacted 2.3 million people.”

Imagine the emotional weight of that.

3. Random Life-Changing Events

Events that don’t depend entirely on the player:

  • Unexpected scandal

  • Accidental viral success

  • Injury

  • Rival sabotage

  • Company bankruptcy

  • A random encounter that changes the course of life

Similar to narrative-driven games where choices matter, but applied to a life simulation.

4. Hidden Potential System

Even with identical training:

  • One Zoi may have 95% musical talent

  • Another may have 70% talent but 120% charisma

  • Another may be average but have incredible luck

This creates organic and unpredictable stories.

The Result

Every player would experience:

  • A story impossible to replicate

  • Different screenshots

  • Different endings

  • Real frustrations

  • Incredible achievements

No repetitive gameplay.

Every new save would feel like a completely different life journey.

Stories that emerge on their own.

Secret Destinies System

The game could create its own stories:

A famous celebrity falls in love with an ordinary person.
A wealthy family loses all their fortune.
A politician gets involved in scandals.
A company grows until it dominates the city.
A royal family faces a succession crisis.

This kind of system would make each save feel like a different TV series, with stories emerging naturally without the player needing to create everything themselves. It would make the inZOI world feel much more alive and unpredictable.

Each Zoi is born with hidden dreams.

Examples:

Find true love.
Become a millionaire.
Become a celebrity.
Have 10 children.
Become mayor of the city.
Travel the world.

The player doesn’t see everything immediately.

They discover it as they get to know the person.

Newspapers and Real Scandals

Newspapers would report things that actually happened in the save:

Marriages.
Divorces.
Scandals.
Companies going bankrupt.
Celebrities.
New millionaires.

Each city would have its own ongoing story.

CONTRACT OF STORY + GAMEPLAY:

If they manage to deliver NPCs with memory, persistent relationships, and dynamic story generation, you choose:

“I want a famous romance story inspired by the 90s.”

From that point on, the city changes.

:camera_with_flash: Paparazzi appear

When the couple goes out:

People take photos.
Reporters wait outside their home.
News appears on the phone.
Fans ask for selfies.

It’s not a scripted event. It happens during normal gameplay.

The city reacts

If fame increases:

Restaurants offer VIP tables.
Invitations to parties appear.
Some people become friendlier.
Others become jealous.

Dynamic drama

The AI can generate situations like:

Fake rumors.
Ex-partners reappearing.
Family members disapproving of the relationship.
Journalists chasing the couple.

But without forcing a fixed outcome.

If you choose Royalty

Gameplay changes completely.

You get:

Invitations to official events.
Public speeches.
Balls and galas.
Diplomatic visits.
International paparazzi.

The player still lives normally, but the world reacts to their status.

If you choose Entrepreneur

Gameplay generates:

Competitors.
New opportunities.
Economic crises.
Employees asking for raises.

Even the city can change as your company grows.

Invisible Director System

Secret Destiny System

Each Zoi is born with hidden dreams.

Examples:

Find true love.
Become a millionaire.
Become a celebrity.
Have 10 children.
Become the mayor of the city.
Travel the world.

The player doesn’t see everything right away. They discover it gradually as they get to know each person. The best part would be an AI observing what’s happening.

Alright. Let’s say they do it.

In that case, I create a Zoe girl, get in the car, and spend entire days driving around the streets, getting out of the car only to sleep, eat, and go to the bathroom.

What will the game do? The AI will go crazy trying to adapt to this somehow.

Will my “charming prince” throw himself under my wheels to somehow get my attention? Or will he chase me across the entire city in his car? And along with him—and the rival who will manage to get pregnant and give birth right in the middle of the chase?

I’m afraid there are very significant differences between a predetermined TV series scenario and a game. AI still can’t replace a professional director, let alone keep up with flexibly adapting to the player’s behavior and reshaping the course of events depending on our unpredictable actions. If the game interferes that heavily with the narrative—we’ll either lose our free will or nothing will work out.

The most we can get is what’s already been discussed as a “fate engine”. The game doesn’t write a literal script of future events, but rather generates a “starting position” and imposes certain constraints. For example, if we’re supposed to have a romance with the prince according to the plot—all romantic actions with any other NPCs for our Zoe become unavailable until she marries him and has a child. And only then does the option to divorce or cheat become available, at the player’s discretion.

Or, as has also been discussed, well-known challenges like “rags to riches” or “apocalypse”, where the game simply helps enforce the conditions by creating starting restrictions on careers, food, interactions, and so on, removing the need for the player to independently monitor things so that Zoe doesn’t accidentally go to a burger joint that supposedly “doesn’t exist” according to the plot (the building will simply be closed until the conditions are met).

I understand your desire. But still, I think the “challenges” approach is more… game-like, shall we say. AI isn’t at that level yet to pull all this off in a game. Especially since all the features that AI can come up with need to appear there first, and that requires an incredible amount of effort from developers to integrate it all and create the corresponding animations. I’m afraid that for now, something like that is unrealistic.

I have to say I agree with a lot of what @Carnel mentioned.

First of all, this is an incredibly thorough post. You clearly put a lot of thought into it, and there are some genuinely interesting ideas here regarding memories, reputation, dynamic events, news systems, and making the world react more deeply to what our Zois do.

That said, I personally really like how inZOI plays today and the type of game it is gradually becoming. One of the things I enjoy most is that it feels like a sandbox where I can create my own stories and decide what matters for my Zois, rather than having the game constantly steer the narrative for me.

If something like this were ever implemented as a completely optional system, though, then why not? More options are usually a good thing, especially when players can choose whether they want that extra layer of guidance and storytelling or not.

Personally, I’d be more excited to see inZOI continue expanding the depth of its existing systems, relationships, memories, careers, personalities, and world simulation. I think those are the things that make every save feel unique while still letting players tell their own stories.

Either way, this was a very interesting read and one of the most detailed suggestions I’ve seen in a while. Thanks for taking the time to put it together.:psycat_standing: :custom_heart:

I actually agree with part of what you’re saying.

What I’m imagining isn’t an AI that forces events to happen or constantly tries to drag the player back onto a predefined storyline.

If my Zoi spends the entire day driving around the city, the AI shouldn’t suddenly make a prince jump in front of the car or have NPCs chase me everywhere. That would feel artificial and completely break immersion.

The idea is more that the AI acts as an invisible director that creates opportunities, not outcomes.

For example, if I choose a “Royal Romance” Story Contract, the game could increase the chances of encounters with royal characters, generate media attention, create social situations, introduce family pressure, or create opportunities for drama. But whether my Zoi participates in any of it would still be entirely up to me.

If I ignore the prince and spend ten years driving around the city, then that’s my story. The world should react to my choices, not override them.

That’s why I see the Story Contract more as a narrative framework than a scripted scenario. Similar to how challenge modes provide goals and context, but with a more dynamic world that generates events based on the theme selected by the player.

I also agree that strong memory systems, relationships, personalities, and world simulation should come first. In fact, those systems are the foundation that would make a Story Mode possible in the future.

The most realistic approach would be an AI system that influences the world rather than controls it.

For example:

• NPCs could have hidden dreams and personal goals.
• The city could react to the actions of Zois.
• Newspapers could report events that actually happened in the save.
• Influential families could build power across generations.
• Scandals, romances, rivalries, and opportunities could emerge naturally.
• The world could continue evolving even without the player’s direct involvement.

But the AI should never force outcomes.

If a player chooses a romance story and then decides to ignore every romantic opportunity to build a business or spend the day driving around the city, the game should respect that decision. The narrative would simply evolve in a different direction instead of trying to push the player back toward the original premise.

The goal wouldn’t be to tell a specific story for the player. The goal would be to create an environment where stories emerge naturally through player choices, NPC ambitions, relationships, and events happening throughout the city.

I think many parts of this idea are actually achievable, especially memory systems, reputation, personal goals, dynamic news, and emergent events. The biggest challenge would be integrating all of these systems in a natural and believable way.

Without deep simulation, dynamic storytelling wouldn’t work. But with it, the goal wouldn’t be to remove player freedom—it would be to make the world feel more alive, responsive, and capable of generating unique stories in every save while still letting players create their own path.

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

I actually agree with much of what you and Carnel are saying.

My idea isn’t to replace the sandbox experience or have the game constantly push players toward a predefined storyline. One of the strengths of inZOI is precisely the freedom to create our own stories.

What I’m imagining is something more like an optional Story Mode or Story Contract system that acts as an invisible director rather than a scriptwriter.

The goal wouldn’t be to control the player, but to create opportunities, conflicts, events, and reactions within the world.

For example, if I choose a “Royal Romance” story, the game shouldn’t force my Zoi to fall in love with a prince. Instead, it could create situations where members of the royal family appear more often, where the media becomes interested, or where social pressure emerges. Whether I engage with any of that would still be my choice.

If I ignore the prince completely and spend ten years running a business or driving around the city, then that becomes my story. The world should react to my decisions, not override them.

I also agree that deeper simulation systems should come first. Strong memories, relationships, personalities, reputations, careers, and autonomous NPC behavior are the foundation that would make something like this possible.

To me, Story Mode isn’t about replacing player creativity. It’s about giving the world more tools to generate meaningful situations on its own, so stories can emerge naturally from the interaction between the player, NPCs, and the simulation itself.

In the end, the sandbox would still exist exactly as it does now. This would simply be an optional layer for players who want a little more narrative direction and a world that reacts more dynamically to what happens in their save.

Yes, but how should it respond? This would be a VERY complex reaction if we want to achieve clearly visible consequences. Specifically at the level of a human director. Otherwise the game will respond, but we simply won’t notice it, and we’ll think that “there are no special story changes at all”.

The first 3 points — yes, I agree with those. But for that, it’s enough to simply add these “aspirations and goals” — and then zoes will act based on them. But the question is: how should the city respond if zoe A is a careerist and desperately wants to become a director? Will people whisper about it on every street corner? But then it would affect every resident of the city — everyone would only be discussing some rumors. The newspaper can report if he gets the desired position — that’s actually the easiest to implement. But once he achieves his goal — what then? Nothing else is mentioned about him, or should the game continuously come up with new aspirations for him? Just if this happens with every zoe — there won’t be enough computing power to calculate all their secret desires, let alone come up with something new for each of them. Except there would be several pre-planned desire chains, and they’d repeat for everyone, the game would just assign them randomly to random characters. But there’s no way to generate them on the fly.

Point 4 — influential families with power. How should the game depict this? I’m afraid it would be something like the “5-star celebrity system” from The Sims. What should happen for me to understand that “this family has been accumulating power over generations”? Will they attack my character? Force the police to arrest him after we were rude to them on the street? Or will everyone just immediately find out about it, and other NPCs will be afraid to interact with us so they don’t fall out of favor?

I just don’t really understand how the game should display this. If only a couple of these actions — then it’ll get boring quickly too. And how would a “family that gained power” differ from a “family that has been accumulating power for many generations”? By house size and number of businesses? What’s the difference that would be clearly visible to the player?

Points 5 and 6 — they work exactly like the first 3. It’s essentially happening already. Just no one shouts about it in the newspapers. So zoes die, are born… Life is already going on if you look carefully.

If we try to develop your ideas further, I’d suggest what you mentioned here:

But this could be implemented not directly as a scenario in the “royal (love, hate, passion…)” sense, but simply as some sort of “direction for world development”. Its initial environment, so to speak.

Right now we can configure the visual aspect of the city, right? Make it dirty or clean. We can adjust hygiene, item durability, number of transport and residents… And it could be the same with the overall development direction, creating a certain mood for all residents.

For example, the city could have settings like:

  • romance
  • jealousy
  • politeness
  • etc.

If we set “Romance +100” — all zoes constantly flirt, get married, have children. Any romantic actions succeed “with flying colors”.

If we add “Jealousy +100” to “Romance” — zoes are still focused on love, but there’s no flirting around freely — any attempts to interfere with established couples create conflicts, all zoes are terrible possessives about their “significant others”.

If we set “Politeness -100” — the city turns into a place of constant conflicts with endless swearing and fights. And then a jealous zoe immediately rushes at a cheater with fists. But if “Politeness +100” — he may be jealous but won’t make a scene, he’ll just suffer, becoming deeply unhappy, but (without player initiative) won’t say anything to the one who cheated, just trying to avoid communication…

That is, the game moves away from the story of “There is a prince and Cinderella”, where behavior choice is a narrow corridor. Instead, a general city atmosphere is born where the player can easily realize any story without being limited by the script. If they want — they can easily attract the attention of a prince or a neighbor, because “Romance +100” and everyone tends to give in to flirting easily. And then, by simply changing the settings, they change the city’s behavior: Cinderella has already become a princess, and now jealousy is added (so the prince doesn’t look at others), and increased crime is added to the city (that’s already there), rudeness, annoying press… And now we have a completely different atmosphere game than at the beginning. And there are no scripts for that, just the player’s choice about what general direction all the personalities in the city develop in (in addition to what’s determined by their characters).

I think we’re actually closer in opinion than it may seem.

You make a good point that simply giving every NPC a hidden goal is not enough. If those goals don’t create visible consequences, then players will never notice them and the system becomes meaningless.

When I talk about secret dreams or ambitions, I don’t imagine every citizen constantly talking about them. A Zoi trying to become a CEO shouldn’t become city-wide news. What should be visible is the effect of that ambition on their behavior.

For example, they might work longer hours, pursue promotions, switch companies more often, build professional connections, compete with coworkers, or become frustrated if they repeatedly fail. The player sees the consequences, not necessarily the hidden goal itself.

The same applies to influential families. I don’t imagine them having magical powers or controlling the police. The difference between a newly rich family and a multi-generational influential family should be visible through social networks, reputation, businesses, political connections, exclusive opportunities, inherited wealth, and how other NPCs perceive them.

I also like your idea of city-wide behavioral settings.

In fact, I think it could work very well together with the Story Contract concept.

Instead of Story Contracts creating specific storylines, they could simply adjust simulation values across the world.

For example:

Royal Romance → increases romance, tradition, media attention, and social status influence.
Celebrity World → increases fame, paparazzi activity, public events, and gossip.
Business Empire → increases ambition, competition, economic opportunities, and corporate rivalries.
Drama Mode → increases jealousy, rumors, conflicts, and emotional reactions.

In that version, the game isn’t trying to create a “Prince and Cinderella” story.

It’s creating a social environment where those kinds of stories can emerge naturally if the player chooses to engage with them.

So perhaps the strongest version of my idea is not a story generator, but a simulation layer that influences the atmosphere of the world while still preserving complete player freedom.

The story would come from the interaction between NPC personalities, city-wide settings, reputation, memories, relationships, and player choices.

Now that’s much more like something developers can actually pull off! :+1: Instead of trying to write a million scenarios for the player, give them the ability to tune the “mood of the city” within the framework of the story they want to play this time.

It’s just things like:

that sound good in theory, but I can’t picture how this would actually look in the game in practice. What would the social network look like for a “simply rich” family versus a “generational wealth family”? If the game creates stories there for them — that’s again “a million scenarios” that developers would have to come up with, just so they exist somewhere in text (and photo) form.

How to show reputation in a game — I also can’t picture. Well, actually, I can imagine how it’s described in a book or shown in a film, where human language is used. Complex nuances of speech play a role there — intonation, sentence structure, descriptions of how exactly a character “meaningfully rolled their eyes and pointed upward” while saying something. But our NPCs sound like “mosy-bosy”, “fali-da”, and other gibberish

We’d need real actors, not game characters, to convey such ephemeral concepts. What I see in the character stats — that they have lots of business connections — will just mean to me as a player “okay, so this is someone important”. I’ll never feel any kind of awe toward this NPC. Because this game is built differently. From the start, there shouldn’t be anyone more important than our character! Whoever I start playing as — the world should “revolve around them”, not them becoming just a “cog in the machine” when events around them rigidly force them to act against our will. That’s what we have real life for. And in a game… Well, if it starts working that way — nobody will want to play it. Because we’d turn into a detached observer of a simulation, setting initial conditions once and then just watching what develops? That wouldn’t be a game anymore, just an experiment.

In other words, either provide specifics on how you see this being implemented directly in the game — or admit that not everything can be realized as a game without an explicit narrative. Some things are better left to books and films, which are designed for exactly that purpose :slightly_smiling_face: :folded_hands:

I actually agree with part of what you’re saying. A life simulation game cannot realistically write millions of unique stories, dialogues, and emotional nuances like a book or a film can.

My idea is not to turn the player into a spectator or make the world more important than the player. The player should always remain the protagonist.

What I’m proposing is much smaller and more systemic.

For example, the difference between a “new money” family and an “old influential family” doesn’t need thousands of written stories.

It could be shown through gameplay:

  • Old families receive invitations to exclusive events.

  • NPCs greet them differently.

  • They have access to elite clubs and influential contacts.

  • Their children start with better social connections.

  • They may have inherited businesses or family foundations.

A newly rich family could have:

  • expensive houses,

  • luxury items,

  • high income,

but lack those historical connections and social prestige.

The player doesn’t need to read a novel about these families. They experience the difference through opportunities and reactions.

The same applies to reputation. It doesn’t need complex dialogue or real actors. Reputation can be felt through gameplay:

  • who invites you,

  • who trusts you,

  • who refuses to work with you,

  • which doors open or remain closed.

And I completely agree that the world should never force the player into a story. The purpose of these systems is simply to make the world react to the player’s choices, not to replace the player as the center of the experience.

I don’t want the game to tell my story for me.

I want the game to create a world that remembers what I did and reacts to it.

While the concept is interesting and very detailed in description, I have to also agree with @Carnel and @itsmechiie7 . In addition to that, the game already has issues executing SmartZoi. I think generating all these possibilities in these scenarios is very heavy to carry, even with a strong PC. Especially if one plays with Mods and CC. It would slow down the game immensely, I imagine, since the AI for generating the scenarios has to adapt to our actions constantly, since, as you suggested, the AI is not supposed to push us into a direction, but adapt to what we do.

Please, hear me out!

I’m asking for specific suggestions on how developers should implement something that makes it clear to a player that this is a “very famous old family”. Let’s read through what you wrote together.

“Old families receive invitations to exclusive events” - how will I, playing as another sim, find out that someone got an invitation, and what makes that event so exclusive?

“NPCs greet them differently” - okay, let’s say I agree with this point. But how do we show it - I’m not quite sure. Is it the same “cartoonish” way as the attitude toward celebrities in Sims 3? Or bows? Something that the player should notice when looking at what’s happening from a bird’s-eye view.

“They have access to elite clubs and influential contacts” - how do we find out about this when playing as our character?

“Their children start with better social connections” - same question: how do we find out about this when playing as our character?

“They may have inherited businesses or family funds” - and how is this different from what a “newly wealthy family” can have: “expensive homes, luxury items, and high income”? So do “old families” have money problems and only inherited businesses? And again: as a player, how would I tell the difference between two wealthy sims, where one is “new money” and the other is “old money”? In reality, I just see two wealthy sims. Everything else stays “off-screen” once I’ve simply started playing as my character.

In the end, of all the differences we see only “NPCs greet them differently” - that’s it.

I won’t analyze the second part further, it’s the same story there. Simply some sims behave friendly toward me, and others don’t. That’s exactly the same as what already exists now. So what differences will there be in terms of “suddenly became rich - heir”?

You can’t convey these nuances without a full-fledged communication simulation! This isn’t a TV show, it’s not a book! You can’t have such literal divisions of people into categories here and maintain the spirit of a “free life simulation”. You’ll have to sacrifice realism, otherwise there’s no way. Otherwise it’s not a “life simulation”, it’s a “game with a story”.
