Beginner Modding Tip Bites - Goodbye to the Shine by recoloring your ORM Map

:custom_idea: In this short mini-tutorial I will show you an easy way to get rid of the shine by simply changing your ORM / ARM map in photoshop or gimp (or your preferred image editor).

What is an ORM/ ARM map?

An ORM / ARM map contains information about the roughness, metalness, ambient occlusion and opacity of your textures. This means that it has an impact on your texture looking metallic and or shiny, and it can be used to get rid of that metalness/shinyness!

And ORM / ARM map will typically look like bellow, a mixture of red, orange and green colors with higher or lower saturations.

How do I get rid of the shine?

See the green part? The more saturated, shiny it is, the less shiny your texture will be. So we are going to do as following:

  1. Open your ORM / ARM Map in Photoshop, Gimp, or your preferred image editor.
  2. Select all the green parts with the magic selection tool.
  3. Paint inside the selection with this color: HEX #4DE000
  4. Save it and import it into your project in the modkit.
  5. Replace your previous ORM / ARM Map with the new one!
