Get Rid of Furniture Refurbishing

In the Bugs section, I learned the inability to refurbish some items is intended, so the thread was closed. I really want to share my wishes and ideas for the feature.

My wish is to get rid of furniture refurbishing entirely, but I don’t want something taken away from players who might like the new feature for some reason… …of course people have all different styles of gameplay and preferences, after all).

Please add a cheat (or option) to disable furniture refurbishing. :folded_hands: :folded_hands: There’s a cheat to stop utility bills entirely, so I think it’s fair enough to make a cheat for this feature! I’m sure there are a lot of players like me that discovered this and were a little bit  annoyed, etc.

Additionally, I think the furniture needs refurbishing way too soon! It happens in less than a year, and a lot of items need to be replaced completely. It’s alright for all items in the home to depreciate, and I don’t mind if that takes less than a year. However, furniture shouldn’t look 20 years old and owned by a cat in less than a year. I think for the sake of all players who want this feature, it should take longer for the furniture to look so worn down.

Remember, we can’t make our cities look rundown anymore, so why is our furniture aging like there are post-apocalyptic conditions?

Furniture that cannot be refurbished needs to be able to be replaced with a simple click on the item and selecting “replace,” because going to build mode and manually replacing every worn item that can’t be refurbished is more than a pain, if you understand my meaning. In fact, all furniture refurbishing (again, for players who actually want the feature) should be a single click action. How do my zois even know how to completely re-do cabinets, beds, wardrobes, etc.? That breaks immersion.

Okay, I’ve complained about it enough. :joy: Please share your ideas and perspectives on the feature if you have some.

A cheat to disable the need for furniture refurbishing is my preference! :folded_hands: :orange_heart:

As I have said previously, I don’t want this feature removing completely - I like the realism and don’t mind my zoi’s having to refurbish items. I also think this is quite a cool feature for anybody wanting to deliberately play a shabby, run-down home for story-telling reasons (given there is no furnishing options to do so directly via build mode).

HOWEVER, I agree 100% that this happens far too quickly - an entire house of furniture requiring refurbishing or replacing completely after 1 week is excessive and annoying. Not to mention costly and time-consuming.

Also - as I have previously suggested - either all items should be possible to refurbish, or to be replaced with one click in-game (not via build mode, which takes quite a while and a lot of rearranging for cabinets, for example).

As Starwing says, ideally furniture ageing should be an option that can be enabled or disabled so that we can choose our preference.

Personally I dont mind keeping the refurbish option. I like doing maintenance.

However when you do, the looks of the item should return to new.
This should include cabinets in kitchen which stand above the floor.

Right now once the furniture looks worn out, it keeps that dismal look and it is impossible to fix.
The only solution is to remove said furniture and place it back again, and that could be a major hurdle in some builds.

So yeah a big +1 for allowing to replace it via a click or adding the refurbish option where it’s missing.
A slider specifically for refurbishing might be nice. I’d probably set to to 2-3x as long to be honest.

I like the feature, but I agree it’s happening too quickly. I don’t mind if smaller, frequently used items need to be refurbished kind of quicker, but things like couches and kitchen cabinets should for sure be slowed down.

I like using refurbishing as a means to raise the Housework skill quickly. Yeah, I’m weird.

But I like the idea of removing wear & tear as an option or cheat. Everybody wins! Well, except for the programmer who has to spend time implementing it.

I find the refurbishing pointless. There could be far better ways to gain skills. If it does stay the amount of time it takes for furniture to age really does need to be extended. IRL, my sofas are more than 10 years old and I have cats. My sofas look better than my zoi’s sofa and she’s only had it a few weeks.

Also, the fridge looks aged, but can’t be refurbished.

The following screenshot was posted by @cosmic in this post and it shows how unrealistic this whole refurbishing thing is.
Which furniture has the edges worn off at this hight where nothing ever touches it?
I have decades old and even antique pieces of furniture which were handed down to me or I even picked up at the side of the road and that doesn’t look so aged -.-
At least give us the option to turn it off with a cheat or in the city settings/options.

Despite the title of my wish thread, I hope I was clear that I don’t want the feature taken away from any players who like it. It’s awful when things are taken away (but the devs have done that a few times now, and it’s really up to them).

I just want a cheat or option.

A cheat might be the best way if the devs and majority of players enjoy the feature (even if they want the timing tuned better). I agree with you that for story purposes, playing with the furniture refurbishing on could be fun if it suits the player’s imaginary scenario. I could see myself enjoying it if it was a choice I had to play with the feature once in a while.

There’s a cheat to disable utility bills, which is a pretty significant thing, I think! It makes sense to me to add a cheat for disabling furniture refurbishing/wear and tear.

Maybe they could add a used furniture section to the pocket market! That way, you could get worn down furniture for a lower price, which would be helpful for zois just building up their personal wealth.

I don’t mind furniture maintenance, but:

  • they get ruined way too quickly
  • the upper kitchen cabinets can’t be renovated, and it doesn’t make sense:
  • I always agree with adding the ability for players to activate/deactivate features

Absolutely, options are always the best way to go if possible. This is a life-sim, and as such lots of options are needed so that people are able to play they want to play.

Good idea, there are plenty sliders for city management, perhaps we need this one, too! Or it could be connected to sanitation, perhaps…? Definitely need some way of customising it, that is for sure.

This is a good idea, not sure if it is likely to happen as it would be more complex to put items on different timers for ageing, but I think a lot of items should just not age at all, realistically. And other objects which are used frequently need to be refurbished or replaced after a longer amount of time. That would be simpler.

One thing I’m curious about with timing of the wear-and-tear is the relation to years in the game. A year is something like 4 days, if you consider the length of pregnancy.

I think it took about 2 weeks for the “refurbish furniture” prompt to show up on my kitchen cabinets, and that’s extremely unrealistic! If your cupboards get that scuffed up in just a few years, you’re really doing something wrong!

We have some faux leather chairs that we gave to our cats because they like them so much for scratching on, and they still haven’t made it look like the sofas in the game, and that’s after they’ve had over a decade of claw fun with their chairs. :joy:

I love the idea of sliders that change the durability of furniture like we have for appliances! Then, if possible, the devs could consider their idea for how long a year is and how long it should take for furniture to depreciate and wear down (except for artwork, which might go up in value).

If possible, they would have something in place for all major furniture items based on the likelihood of that item needing repair or replacement in x number of years. I know it would take a lot of work and some time, but that’s what Early Access is best for.

Hopefully, they can add a few tweaks to make it the best the feature can be. (Optional feature entirely, then options for durability and/or per item settings baked into the furniture items themselves.)
