Ambiguous Translation: "Compliment Appearance" and "Compliment Hairstyle" is not considered flirting/romantic in the U.S by default.

  • Platform: Steam windows

The current translations are not clear from a cultural stand point and thus should be changed.

I am an American and here in the U.S complimenting someone’s appearance (face, hairstyle, clothing) even if they are a stranger is a very common friendly social norm. There have been many occasions where I have said to strangers on the street “I love your outfit.” or “You look gorgeous”. So I assumed that “Compliment Appearance” and “Compliment Hairstyle” was simply a friendly conversation option. It’s not until I decided to go looking for it in the conversation category options after my Zoi will get negative or romantic responses that I realized both are not considered purely platonic interactions.

But “Compliment Appearance” is categorized as humor so it can result in weirdly a romantic interaction or a negative response from Zois. While “Compliment Hairstyle” is categorized as romantic and results in a romantic interaction only if the other Zoi is also interested in your gender. Otherwise the conversation option will just automatically be removed from the queue. Women in the U.S will often compliment other women and men on their hairstyle or outfit without any romantic interest.

The translations for these two conversation options need to be made more obvious they are for romance/flirting and are not platonic.

  1. “Compliment Appearance” should either be categorized as friendly or the translation should be changed to “Point out their attractiveness” or “Compliment them on their attractiveness”.
  2. “Compliment Hairstyle” should either be categorized as friendly or the translation should be changed to something more obvious to indicate it is for flirting.

Yes, I noticed that too. Just like some other interactions, e.g. “tell a dirty joke” (got re-listed in humor category), those got re-categorized weirdly.

Same is with “how yoe´ve been doing”. I am not a native speaker but this seems to me like a normal question you would ask someone you have not seen for a while. But in the game this is a romantic interaction and when you select this and then hover over the action it tells you “say you want to get to know them better” which would normally not be what I thought when asking someone how he has been lately

Yeah. The other day I told my zoi to greet someone “informally” not realising it was rude. I’m from Australia, everything we do is informal :joy: . It might be easier to provide a symbol or colour coding system to indicate which items are rude/flirty/etc.
