Preschooler lifestage

Reposting from discord

The toddlers currently in game are cute and will definitely improve with time, but it feels like a weird jump going from drooling, crawling babies to ready to go to 3rd grade. Since heights aren’t an option, I suggest introducing a life stage that looks around 3 or 4 years old and naming it something like pre schooler. They’ll look like something between a toddler and a child, but will behave differently.

Heres a sketch i drew to better illustarte the idea of how it’ll look like:

Anyways, below I’ll outline which behaviours would make the livestages true to life:

Newborn: they sleep for short bursts, and mostly just eat and poop, but do require socializing and entertainment.

Infant: theyre discovering themelselves and the world around them. They’re learning to sit, crawl, try solid foods, play with toys, ect. They also require constant parental supervision and particularly clingy infants will cry uf they’re not being socialized with/held.

Toddler:at this stage they learn how to walk, talk, use the potty, dance, as well as play with others, although theyd still prefer to play with their parents. They still require constant supervision and play with infant toys. Theyll babble at this age, though gifted toddlers are capable of talking in coherent sentences and even running around. They can also start observing older zois. They’re also more prone to sickness, which lasts until they’re preteens.

Preschooler: they become more active and want to run around everywhere. They equally want to play eith their parents as well as playing with others. They also start learning new adult skills such as arithmatics, logic, letters, ect as well as some more nuanced skills like drawing and music, but at a decreased pace than adults.They can also use the playground equipment, but have to be supervised. Basically smaller kids with chubbier faces. They also love following their older siblings and copying adult behaviours. Observing can also gain them slight skill points.

Child: at this age, kids attend school. Since theyre still young, they don’t really dedicate themselves to schoolwork and instead choose to run around and play make believe. While they can still play with their parents, they prefer to play with their peers. Since they’re still young, they’ll mostly play in the neighbourhood (unless their parents drive them somewhere) or at home. This age is important for developing their social skills as it really shapes their personality.

Preteen: at this stage, they become more mature. They usually stop playing with dolls and instead choose other activities like video games, sports, books ect. They start dedicating themselves more to schoolwork, and play tag,hide and seek, ect with their peers and start becoming more adult. They choose to spend more time with their friends as opposed to their parents too. They might also start developing crashes and hold hands, give small gifts,and even hug ect. Though they know what love is, they don’t exactly understand it. They also start going to places around the city by themselves like malls and stuff, as well as taking the bus to various locations and meeting up with friends. They look like older kids with more elongated jaws and their height is a bit shorter than a teen. Also, preteens asually have enlarged teeth and ears since by that age they alrrady aquire the adult size of their teeth and ears, though their bodies haven’t caught up yet.

Teen: at this stage, they’ll start thinking about who or what they want to be. They throw themselves into school work and that’s when they also start discovering their gender identity and orientation as well as having frequent mood swings. They might also be more likely to commit crimes. At this stage, they can also find jobs to earn money. They’ll start actively avoiding their parents and will beraly be home (mostly choosing to go to malls, movies, ect) and hanging out with friends. When theyre home, they’ll probably just stay in their rooms. Theyre also more likely to yell at their parents and younger siblings for annoyinh them. At this age they can also start dating and grow up to be proper adults.

Young adult: at this stage, they finally reach adulthood and can start attending university, working, moving out, ect and just overall figuring their life out. While they can have kids of their own, most wont want to have them at this age and will instead focus on making their lives stable. They’ll also want to be out and about, going to malls, drinking coffee with friends, night clubs, parties, ect ect. Theyre very active and will rarily stay home (even the introverts will go out to places like libraries and parks).

Adult: at this stage they start focusing on what comes next. Their careers should be established, they should have their own houses. They might even have a few kids, or they might start wanting them. At this stage, they’ll also choose to stay home as opposed to going out, preferring staying at home and watching TV as opposed to bustling parties. They might also start experiencing random body aches, sometimes waking up with a sore neck or painful knee. If zois arent happy with their lives, they can also start experiencing a midlife crisis.

Seniors: at this age, they might already have grandkids and they can retire. They accumulated a lot of wealth over their lives and can now start truly “living”. They’ll get a new invigorating want to go out and explore everything the world has to offer, becoming more social, ect. Badically, this is their “second coming” livestage, and this is the stage where they want to live out their young adult stage with much more freedom. They want to really throw themselves into their hobbies, attend activities with their fellow elder friends and even go on vacations. Though, they’re also more prone to sickness and random body pains.

Elder: the final stage of life. They’ll be pretty slow, and their energy and bladder will decrease quickly. They’ll require naps and spend their days leisurely like playing bingo, feeding birds at the park, or hanging out with their kids/grandkids. They don’t really have anything to look forward to. If they lead a good life, they’ll be happy and at peace. If they have unfinished goals, they might want to tie loose ends before they kick the bucket so they can die at peace. They tend to get pretty lonely and will often want to talk random younger stranger’s ears off. They can also share valuable advice that could boost skills and tell their life stories to the younger zois. Also, if they dont keep their minds occupied with brain exercises, their logic skill may start decreasing at a rapid rate

I think very similarly to you.
I really liked your ideas.
I also think there are gaps between some ages, especially from baby to child.
Additionally, I think the age ranges from ‘adult’ onwards look older than they should.

I posted another topic sharing my opinions on this subject.
Below are my considerations from the post. I would like to know your opinion.

I don’t know if other players think like me… But, I am not entirely satisfied with the age ranges of the zoids.
In my opinion, there is a gap between some age ranges, and also age ranges that look older than they should.
Personally, I think it’s strange that newborns and babies look the same and are the same size. I think newborns should be smaller and have specific characteristics of that age (have their eyes more closed, have no teeth, keep their hands closed, sometimes still be a bit skinny, etc.).
Perhaps they could combine all the current functionality/playability of newborns and babies to be used only for babies, since they already exist, and allowing interaction with the babies both in the crib and outside of it. In fact, I think it’s strange that newborns are stuck in the crib, just as it’s strange not to be able to put babies to sleep in the crib. It would also be interesting if babies had only 4 or 8 teeth (only central incisors or all incisors).
I feel there is a gap/void/space between the ‘baby’ and ‘child’ phases… So, to be completely honest, it would be interesting not only to modify the newborns and “combine” the current ‘newborn’ and ‘baby’ phases, but also to add another age range right after. It would be like bigger babies, who already know how to walk, talk, and have a bit more autonomy; or like small children, in preschool phase (02 to 05 years).

Regarding the following age ranges, considering the school phases, I understand that:

  • child (elementary school I): 06/07 to 09/10 years;
  • teenager (elementary school II): 10/11 to 13/14 years;
  • young (high school): 14/15 to 17/18 years;
  • young adult (college): 18/19 to 29 years.
    Thus, I consider that the division of age ranges is great, but not the appearance. I think there is a big difference in the appearance of the ‘child’ zoid to the ‘teenager’ zoid. In addition, the appearance of ‘teenager’, ‘young’, and ‘young adult’ zoids is very similar/alike. Many times, in simulation mode, it is difficult to distinguish the ages without positioning the mouse over the zoid, to show its information. For these reasons, I consider that it would be good to reformulate a bit the appearance of teenage and young zoids. I think the appearance of the ‘teenager’ should become that of the ‘young’, leaving a bigger difference between the ‘young’ and the ‘young adult’. The ‘teenager’ zoids could have an average height between what they have today and that of the child zoids, and a slightly more childish appearance than now.

I don’t know about other languages, but there is a small mistake in the case of the translation into Portuguese. As far as I could notice, the phase called ‘teenager’, which studies in elementary school II, represents the age range of 10/11 to 13/14 years; and the phase called ‘young’, which studies in high school, represents the age range of 14/15 to 17/18 years. Therefore, they should be called respectively ‘pre-teenager’ and ‘teenager’. The term ‘young’ would actually refer to the ‘young adult’ phase (as a synonym/equivalent).

Finally, from the ‘adult’ zoid onwards, I consider that they look older than they should. Some adults, for example, already seem to be middle-aged; middle-aged adults seem to be 60 years or older; and the elderly seem to be over 80 years old. In my opinion, ‘young adults’ should NEVER have wrinkles or expression lines, they should have skin completely without any wrinkles or expression lines; adults could sometimes have only a few expression lines, but never have any wrinkles; middle-aged adults could have a lot of expression lines and some wrinkles, but few; the elderly could have wrinkles, but not as many as they have now. So, my opinion is that they could (starting from young adult) put the appearance of each age range for the next range; and create another age range, which would be like an older elderly person/elder, really representing elderly people aged 80 or over. And they could keep the height and proportions of the young adult but perhaps use the current skin texture of a young person (high school).

Summarizing the opinions above:

  • Newborns: modify the appearance to really look like a real newborn;
  • Baby (up to 02 years): “combine” current functionality/playability of ‘newborn’ and ‘baby’ (and leave with only 4 or 8 teeth);
  • Small Child (02 to 05/06 years): create a new age range of bigger baby (already walking and talking) or small child (preschool age);
  • Child (06/07 to 09/10 years): keep as is;
  • Teenager (10/11 to 13/14 years): modify the appearance making it shorter and with a slightly more childish trait;
  • Young (14/15 to 17/18 years): change the appearance to the current appearance of teenager;
  • Brazilian Portuguese: replace the age names ‘teenager’ and ‘young’ with the names ‘pre-teenager’ and ‘teenager’ respectively;
  • Young Adult (18/19 to 29 years): keep current height and proportions, but with the skin texture that is currently of the ‘young’;
  • Adult (30 to 39/49 years): use the skin texture that is currently of the ‘young adult’;
  • Middle-aged Adult (40/50 to 59 years): use the skin texture that is currently of the ‘adult’;
  • Elderly (60 to 79 years): use the skin texture that is currently of the ‘middle-aged adult’;
  • Elder (from 80 years onwards): create a new age range using the skin texture that is currently of the ‘elderly’.

I don’t know if other players agree, but I really think that this reorganization of ages/age ranges/life phases would make a big difference. I think the current form is somewhat flawed and incomplete.
I would like to know the opinion of other players.

Personally, in an ideal InZOI…

I’d create an additional stage between toddler and child (I like the Preschooler idea)

Also, and I know DEVS don’t want to do it… yet… But having Preschooler and Adolescent have their own sizes, in-between down the middle of the previous and next stage. So an adolescent would be half-way as tall between Child and Teenager.

Same rule could apply for the preschooler.

= = = = =

As for age of the groups, it is my hope that eventually we, the players, will be in control of those.
But using “Realistic Aging” (or pre-0.20 InZOI ruleset):
Newborn : 1
Toddler : 2-3
Preschooler would be like 4-5-6 (New age group and size)
Child : 7-8-9-10-11-12
Adolescent : 13-14-15-16-17 (New size)

= = = = =

I really don’t care if the devs make those a Payable DLC in the future (I’d auto-buy it, it’s soooo worth it).
The Adolescent one is kindof required though, it’s jarring to see them in the adult size in Middle-School.
The Preschooler is not as required IMHO, but it would still very much be fun and more gradual progression of your child growing up. Both new sizes would go A LONG way into immersion.

I really really hope the devs reconsider this.
Also give us control of the age groups, let player adjust their Zoi’s life as everyone would like different things, clearly proven by every post in this thread before mine, and obviously mine.

Please consider this suggestion/wishlist/feedback/request, dear devs.
Thank you !

Yes this is pretty much what I said in my post. Just let the current “toddlers” be called “infants” and give us an actual toddler stage after … bc the toddlers in InZoi should be bigger (like the “preschooler” in your illustration) and learn how to walk and talk on their own… the “toddlers” in InZoi rn behave exactly like “infants” in Sims 4 so it would be way more simple for them to just rename the toddlers, and then add an ACTUAL toddler. I think that’s the first step to diminish the gap feeling playing out the childhoods.
