Change How Karma Works: Make Positive & Negative Interactions More Accessible

The karma system in Inzoi is a unique concept in a Life Sim, but in my opinion, karma level shouldn’t influence what actions your Zoi strictly can and cannot do in the game so heavily.

In real life, good and bad karma have nothing to do with directly preventing or allowing actions you can take. It’s about receiving back what you put out. Therefore, karma in the game should influence luck, the chance of successful interaction, and decision autonomy, not whether you can, for example, steal at all or not.

Life is spontaneous, but so much spontaneity is removed when Zoi actions are so heavily dictated and restricted by karma level.

What if I wanted my “goody-goody” Zoi to suddenly have an out-of-character moment and fight someone, or decide to steal something? To do that, I currently have to repeatedly run several negative interactions until their Karma is low enough to carry out those actions, which is unrealistic, takes way too much time given how little the meter moves with each interaction, and is way too restrictive.

My suggestion is to release the interactions locked behind Karma Levels so that Zois can live more freely and do whatever they want, good or bad…

That being said, if this change or something similar does take place, I ask the devs to consider the following:

  • Tune autonomy properly so that the sliders actually make a significant difference with Zoi’s actions in the world.

    • Most of the time, conversations are autonomously negative even if the sliders are positive.
  • Make Good and Bad karma influence the likelihood (autonomy) of a Zoi carrying out good or bad interactions without actually locking the interactions behind the Karma Level

    • Zois with good karma should have a high chance of performing good karma actions and a very slight chance of performing bad, and vice versa, so that you won’t have Zoi acting out of character too heavily unless it’s user-directed after freeing these interactions
    • Zoi with neutral karma should have a base chance of either type of interaction occurring, but have that chance influenced by City Settings (Conversation Karma Positivity/Negativity sliders).
      • If the City Settings slider is at “neutral,” let it be a random chance that will push individual Zois to one side or the other. Once they are on one side, it should be harder to autonomously reach the other side. That will create the dynamic for each Zoi.
  • Make Karma Actions have more impact so that we have more dynamics.

    • Nearly all of my Player Zois always end up with neutral, slightly good, or slightly bad karma because it’s hard to maintain unless you’re constantly doing bad or good interactions.
    • To counterbalance this change for those who don’t want their Zoi’s karma changing so much all the time, add a “Lock Karma” toggle to a Zoi’s profile that keeps the current value from changing

If anyone has any other suggestions or alternative ideas to add to this, please do!

I couldn’t agree more.

Improvements in the Karma system are needed, and I believe this would be the perfect approach. As you mention, limiting the actions of the zois depending on their karma limits the potential gameplay a Karma system could deliver: A goody-two-shoes zoi can see themselves involved in a bad situation, where they have to do something such as stealing, fighting etc… and your mafia guy can be a very nice dude in their regular day to day.

With all this rambling I mean that I agree with you a hundred percent!

Update on this: Looks like the Dev Team has started changing Karma in this direction!

After the October 30, 2025, v0.4.0 update, Karma interactions are no longer locked or unlocked by Karma Status! In fact, the Karma Status feature seems to have completely disappeared O_O

But the good news is that this means even “Goody-Goody Zois” can now have those momentary lapses of judgment WITHOUT having to ruin their karma first! :raising_hands::raising_hands::raising_hands:

I’m not exactly sure what the Devs’ future plans are about this going forward, but for now, I am so happy just having the interactions unlocked. Free will for the win! :joy:

I’m not going to mourn Karma scores to be honest, especially the weird city-wide karma hivemind. Karma seems to be mostly a feature of ghost play now, which makes sense given that it’s a spiritual thing. Zois should obviously face consequences for doing bad things, but I’d prefer for those be realistic (ruining relationships, going to jail etc.) rather than “your karma score went down”.
