Refining the door locking system

I am glad that there is a door locking system, but I think it could use some refinement, specifically:

  • make it more clear that the door direction matters (maybe in a message when setting the lock), and more importantly:
  • set an option to change the direction of the lock, whether it’s locked from the inside, locked from the outside, or locked from both sides.
  • the ability to set advanced filters on locks, like specific zois, zois of a specific gender, age, career, skill level, etc

This post was originally a bug report, but it ended up being user error on my part that ended up inspiring this request. The original bug report is below:

  • Game Version: 20260114.9803.W

  • Platform: SteamWindows version on Linux via Proton

  • Mods: active

    • no auto change clothes - sleep & shower
    • balanced weight
    • body sliders extended
  • Hardware Specifications & Operating System (OS version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage…):

    • Linux - CachyOS
    • 64gb RAM
    • 1tb storage
    • AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
    • Intel 13th Gen Core i7-13700K
  • Steps to Reproduce:

    • create business on the default “My Small Shop” cafe that is given to player for free
    • add a wall on one side of the counters with a door set to business operator/employees only
    • on the other side of the counters, add more counters to block it off to keep NPCs from coming in that way
    • run the business as usual
    • NPCs will randomly walk through the door and then get stuck there. It seems to possibly be connected to them buying things from the kiosk/display
    • photo below shows layout as well as two NPCs stuck behind the bar with one of my employees

Okay, so it seems like the issue was with the door facing the wrong direction. Thanks for the help!

With that said, I would like to turn this post into two requests:

  • make it more clear that the door direction matters (maybe in a message when setting the lock), and more importantly:
  • set an option to change the direction of the lock, whether it’s one locked from the inside, locked from the outside, or both

@MisterCrumplebottom I totally agree. In one of my games I locked the door to the study for everybody except the house owner. But this door was facing the wrong direction, so the children could enter the study, but not leaving it. They almost starved before I recognized this incident.

By the way, there is a similar “problem” with gates/doors at the entrance of the lot. The indicator triangle has to point outwards, otherwise the event “Welcome to the neighbourhood” won’t work correctly, because the welcoming neighbour is place inside the lot and the freshly moved in ZOI outside.
