[04.10.26] Stylistic mismatches of cartoonish/exaggerated animations in realism, Professional mocap, K-drama actors, and scenes

Why change?

Am I understanding correctly that you actually LIKE these animations, right? (just clarifying, in case there’s a translation inaccuracy). Both of them seem pretty natural to me.

But regarding the overall feedback… For me, even vivid emotional expressions aren’t a major issue. What I’d really want most is something that still isn’t listed by the developers as explicit plans: the ability to easily customize posing. I’ve written about this more than once, and Kjun mentioned they’ve seen it. But there’s a huge gap between ā€œwe understand this is importantā€ and ā€œwe’re planning to do it.ā€ Because he also lists as ā€œimportantā€ things like, essentially step-by-step pregnancy tracking: morning sickness, lab work, medical exams, complications during childbirth, cesarean sections… God, I just hope it never comes to that, it would be insane! Though someone must like it since they’re asking for it. Although I’d suggest such people just play a surgeon simulator if they want to dive that deeply into medical aspects. So probably my ā€œpose editorā€ is also shelved somewhere on a ā€œdistant back shelf,ā€ just in case there are no new ideas left.

But if we had something like that — why would I care how realistically the Zois react in the game itself, if I could position them however I want at any moment and play out any scene? That seems really important to me. But, as I’ve said, I’ve come to terms with the fact that nothing like that will happen in the coming months  And yet this hope, apparently, is enough to outweigh all the shortcomings of the built-in animation for me.

I’m not denying that pose making / posing is important.
But mocap is just as essential, because players spend most of their time with the game in motion, not on pause. If it were that simple to capture clean, bug‑free animation using built‑in video capture tools + Live Link Face, then sure, that would settle the question… but while the iPhone can capture facial animation professionally, full‑body capture is a different level of complexity.
Krafton has its own mocap studio and actors, animations are captured in inZOI, not hand‑keyed. That’s their advantage over everyone else, and something modders are unlikely to match at a high level.

Yes, of course, I understand all that too. 99% of players just play and record individual moments ā€œas isā€, so built-in animation is much more in demand. And I completely agree about video capture — it’s very problematic to implement these days. Although not impossible, it seems to me: webcam capture and optimization using AI would make it possible. After all, just the other day there was news that AI, after some training, is capable of identifying all the muscles in your arm and shoulder that you engage just by moving your finger across a smartphone! So determining human body movement and interpreting it into character pose changes is absolutely doable even with DIY tools. But for that they’d first need to develop such an AI, or establish a partnership with someone, so discussing this prematurely.

As for photos — I created a thread where I gave an example from a very old game. Even back then there was a puppet deformation feature — [04.02.26] Š’Š¾Š·Š¼Š¾Š¶Š½Š¾ŃŃ‚ŃŒ Š²Ń€ŃƒŃ‡Š½ŃƒŃŽ стŠ°Š²ŠøŃ‚ŃŒ Zoi в Š»ŃŽŠ±ŃƒŃŽ позу

That is, you literally drag a slider — and the arm or leg follows it, the head turns following the virtual gaze direction object, and with the light source taken into account, the lighting change is quite reflected on the skin. And the panel at the bottom lets you select a facial expression and save any pose as a ready-made template to easily use it further in the narrative. And if this was possible over 20 years ago, then I’m completely and utterly confident it’s possible now. Even if it requires substantial refinement.

So if not animation, then at least static poses we could definitely create at an absolutely professional level if we were given control of each finger in a simple and natural way, practically like in CAZ.

I’ve also been requesting tools like a Cinematic/Director Tool for about half a year now, inspired by The Movies ( Showtime, Storytime DLC (Broadcasting, Blogging, Film/Show Production, Theaters/Cinemas; Scripts, Scene Director Tools, The Movies-inspired) , and it even made it into the recent ā€œYour Storyā€ response. Past gen games really did have more flexibility in providing customization tools, but in many other aspects they were simpler, or those tools were a core part of the gameplay itself.

And let’s be honest, inZOI is already delivering these tool, for example using AI to generate our own mocaps, yes, there are still issues with recognizing hands behind the back, fingers, and wrists, but it does exist, plus Kjun mentioned that they had already been developing tools for camera control but paused, so we can’t deny inZOI’s contribution to customization.

But still, when we buy a game, even one open to modding, we expect a guideline and for the devs themselves to follow it (yes, what in another game would be called Maxis match and alpha content). and that’s the problem I tried to outline and… wait… there’s more

Thank you guys!!!
