A New Skill System for inZOI: From Apprentice to Master

A New Skill System for inZOI: From Apprentice to Master

Summary of My Idea

My idea is to transform inZOI’s skill system into something much deeper than a simple experience bar. Instead of progressing by endlessly repeating the same actions, I believe every Zoi should develop real competencies through the experiences they live, the successes they achieve, the mistakes they make, and the choices they make throughout their lives.

I imagine a system organized into main categories, such as Music, Culinary Arts, Fitness, Technology, Art, Gardening, and more. Within each category, players could choose different specializations, allowing every Zoi to follow a completely unique path. For example, in Culinary Arts, a player could become a Restaurant Chef, Pastry Chef, Festival Chef, or Culinary Researcher. In Music, a Zoi could specialize in playing instruments, composing music, or music production.

Skill progression would happen naturally through the character’s daily life. Cooking meals, practicing an instrument, studying, working, going to the gym, or participating in events would all contribute to growth. More importantly, I would love to see failures become meaningful as well, rewarding players with valuable lessons, new personality traits, special events, and personal development instead of simply punishing them.

Beyond traditional progression, I imagine the system could include:

  • Specializations within every skill.

  • Traits that are acquired through life experiences.

  • A separation between Knowledge and Practice, allowing a Zoi to understand the theory without necessarily mastering the execution.

  • Emotional states directly affecting performance, such as anxiety, confidence, inspiration, and fatigue.

  • Natural aptitudes that change how a Zoi learns without determining their ultimate success.

  • Random events, criticism, competitions, and unexpected opportunities that make every journey unpredictable.

  • A mentor and apprentice system where experienced Zois can teach the next generation.

  • Masterpieces at the highest skill level, such as legendary recipes, famous paintings, award-winning albums, or unique hybrid flowers.

  • A legacy system where books, recipes, works of art, restaurants, and teachings remain in the world even after a Zoi has passed away.

My main goal is for no two Zois to ever be the same, even if they reach exactly the same skill level. I want each character to be defined by their own story—their decisions, failures, achievements, career changes, personality, and reputation built over a lifetime.

In my vision, skills would stop being just numbers and instead become life stories. Progression would no longer be about filling an experience bar, but about living a meaningful journey. I believe this approach would make inZOI feel much more immersive, organic, and closer to a true life simulation than traditional skill progression systems.

I believe this could be one of the biggest evolutions possible for inZOI’s skill system. Instead of following the traditional model of simply progressing from level 1 to level 10 and unlocking a few objects, skills could become deep, dynamic, and unique personal journeys for every Zoi.

A New Skill System: From Apprentice to Master

Level Stage Philosophy
1–5 Apprentice Learning, making mistakes, and discovering interests
6–10 Professional Mastering fundamentals and unlocking advanced content
11–15 Specialist Choosing a personal path and developing expertise
16–20 Master Creating a legacy, teaching others, and influencing the city

Progression would not depend solely on XP.

To level up, Zois would need to:

  • Regularly practice the skill;

  • Complete unique challenges;

  • Achieve specific milestones;

  • Build a reputation;

  • Make decisions that shape their professional personality.

A Practical Experience System

Instead of gaining experience by endlessly repeating actions, Zois would develop real competencies.

Examples:

  • Cook fifty meals without burning them;

  • Perform ten shows in a row without mistakes;

  • Sell twenty paintings;

  • Grow fifty rare plants.

Failures would also teach valuable lessons.

A Zoi who burns twenty dishes could unlock the trait:

Learned from Mistakes

Greatly reduces the chance of future cooking failures.

A musician who performs poorly several times could receive a special event:

Overcoming Stage Fright

Completing this event would increase their confidence.

Different Stories for Every Zoi

Two Zois could both have Cooking at level 20 and still be completely different.

Zoi A

  • Renowned chef

  • Won five cooking competitions

  • Owns a five-star restaurant

  • Mentors young chefs

Zoi B

  • Lost three competitions

  • Changed careers twice

  • Closed a restaurant

  • Rebuilt their reputation years later

  • Became a culinary researcher

Zoi C

  • Street food specialist

  • Knows every festival recipe

  • Never worked in a restaurant

  • Published a traditional recipe book

The Main Concept

Skills would stop being just numbers.

Instead, they would become life stories, filled with successes, failures, changes in direction, fresh starts, personality development, reputation, choices, and consequences.

As a result, no two Zois would ever have exactly the same journey, even if they started with identical traits. This would make the system feel much closer to a true life simulation rather than the traditional approach of simply filling an experience bar until reaching the maximum level.

Natural Aptitude System

Not all Zois would be born with the same potential.

Examples:

  • Refined Palate → learns recipes faster.
  • Absolute Pitch → automatically recognizes musical notes.
  • Shaky Hands → initial difficulty with detailed painting.
  • Good Coordination → learns sports more easily.

These aptitudes would not determine success, only change the journey.

Knowledge vs. Technique

A skill could be divided into two bars:

Knowledge

  • Reading books
  • Attending classes
  • Researching

Practice

  • Performing tasks
  • Experimenting
  • Working

A Zoi might know everything about cooking but still cook poorly.

Another might have never studied but cook incredibly well.

Masterpiece System

At level 20, it would be possible to create something unique.

Examples:

Cooking

  • Legendary recipe

Art

  • Famous painting

Music

  • Award-winning album

Sports

  • Municipal record

Gardening

  • Unique hybrid flower

Each masterpiece would be permanently saved in the world.

Mentors and Apprentices

Master Zois could accept students.

Apprentices would inherit small advantages.

Examples:

  • Learned techniques from Chef Antônio
  • Disciple of Maestro Kim
  • Studied under a renowned artist

Some masters would be demanding.
Others would be patient.

Pressure and Emotion System

Skills would be affected by emotional state.

Examples:

  • Anxious → more mistakes in performances
  • Confident → higher chance of success
  • Tired → reduced learning speed
  • Inspired → higher-quality creations

Regional Specializations

Each city would have its own knowledge.

Example – Cooking:

  • Coastal city → seafood
  • Mountain city → traditional dishes
  • Modern city → molecular gastronomy

Art:

  • Historic city → classical techniques
  • Technological city → digital art

Career Stories

The game could record a full life trajectory.

Example: Career Diary

  • 2015 → Learned to cook
  • 2017 → Burned first meal
  • 2019 → Won local competition
  • 2021 → Opened a restaurant
  • 2024 → Went bankrupt
  • 2026 → Published a book
  • 2028 → Received the title of Master Chef

Random Events

Unexpected events could occur during skill progression.

Cooking:

  • Food critic visits the restaurant
  • TV show invites the Zoi
  • Power outage during a banquet

Music:

  • Instrument breaks
  • Invitation to international festival
  • Band breaks up

Art:

  • Gallery cancels exhibition
  • Artwork goes viral
  • Client rejects commission

Specialization Change

A Zoi could abandon one path and start another.

Example:

  • Restaurant Chef (level 15)
    → Culinary Researcher (level 11)
    → Pastry Chef (level 17)

The character would retain part of their accumulated knowledge.

Acquired Traits

Instead of being fixed at birth, Zois could develop traits over time.

Examples:

  • Perfectionist → produces higher-quality items, works slower
  • Improviser → fewer penalties from mistakes
  • Competitive → bonus in contests
  • Resilient → recovers confidence quickly after failures

Legacy System

When a Zoi grows old or dies, their legacy remains.

  • Written books continue to be sold
  • Created recipes can be learned by others
  • Paintings are displayed in museums
  • Students remember their teachings
  • Founded restaurants can be inherited by descendants

This would make skills more than mechanical progression—they become part of the world’s history, allowing each generation of Zois to influence the next.

The Organic Evolution System The Core Concept (Inspired by Paralives) Instead of the traditional and generic “bars that fill up” on their own, the game would adopt a menu based on General Categories + Technical Specializations (such as Music branching out into Piano or Guitar). The major innovation is that this progression stops being just a number and directly impacts the Zoi’s animations, behavior, and daily routine.

The Skill Menu in inZOI (Inspired by Paralives)

Instead of a generic bar that fills up automatically, the inZOI menu could adopt the same style of General Categories + Technical Specializations, adapted for the game’s ultra-realistic graphics engine.

1. Category: Music & Performance

  • General Skill: Music

  • Sub-skills (Specializations):

    • Acoustic Guitar

    • Grand Piano

    • Synthesizer & Production

  • How to level up in inZOI: Your Zoi can actively practice in their bedroom, busk on the streets to earn money, or watch video tutorials on the computer.

2. Category: Culinary Arts & Nutrition

  • General Skill: Culinary Arts

  • Sub-skills (Specializations):

    • Home Cooking

    • Baking & Pastry

    • Barista & Mixology

  • How to level up in inZOI: Cooking daily meals, experimenting with new ingredients bought from stores, or messing up recipes (which triggers funny animations of the Zoi burning the food).

3. Category: Well-Being & Fitness

  • General Skill: Fitness & Body

  • Sub-skills (Specializations):

    • Weightlifting

    • Yoga & Flexibility

    • Jogging & Stamina

  • How to level up in inZOI: Going to the local gym, doing push-ups in the living room, or jogging through city parks. As the level increases, the Zoi’s physical definition changes noticeably.

4. Category: Technology & Innovation

  • General Skill: Technology

  • Sub-skills (Specializations):

    • Programming

    • Gaming

    • AI Engineering

  • How to level up in inZOI: Spending nights programming on the PC, participating in gaming tournaments, or interacting with the house’s smart systems.

Claro! Aqui está um exemplo em inglês mostrando como esse sistema funcionaria durante a gameplay de inZOI, como se fosse uma demonstração de uma partida.

Example of How This System Would Work in Gameplay

Imagine creating a new Zoi who dreams of becoming a famous chef.

At the beginning of the game, they only know a few simple recipes, such as scrambled eggs, grilled cheese, and pasta. The first few meals don’t go very well. Sometimes they burn the food, overcook the pasta, or forget ingredients.

Instead of simply losing progress, every mistake contributes to their experience. After burning twenty meals, they unlock the “Learned from Mistakes” trait, which greatly reduces the chance of making the same cooking errors in the future.

As the days pass, your Zoi starts discovering new recipes naturally. They eat at different restaurants, visit food festivals, watch cooking shows on TV, travel to other cities, and even learn secret family recipes from famous chefs. Every new experience expands their cookbook.

When they reach Cooking Level 10, the game doesn’t force them into a single progression path. Instead, it asks the player to choose a specialization.

You decide to become a Restaurant Chef.

Now the gameplay changes completely.

Instead of only cooking, your Zoi must hire employees, manage the restaurant, satisfy customers, handle stressful dinner rushes, and respond to food critics. During one busy evening, a famous food critic unexpectedly visits the restaurant. Your performance during that dinner determines whether your reputation increases or decreases.

Later in the game, your restaurant receives terrible reviews after several mistakes. Your Zoi becomes stressed and temporarily gains the “Frustrated” emotional trait, making cooking slightly less effective. Rather than being a punishment, this opens a special personal event where your Zoi can regain confidence by practicing, studying new techniques, and improving their restaurant.

Years later, your Zoi becomes a respected Master Chef. They publish a cookbook, mentor younger chefs, and create a Legendary Recipe that becomes permanently available in the game world.

Even after your Zoi grows old and passes away, their legacy remains. Other Zois can buy their cookbook, learn the legendary recipe, visit the restaurant they founded, and even study under chefs who were once their apprentices.

Now imagine another player reaching Cooking Level 20.

Instead of becoming a Restaurant Chef, they choose the Culinary Researcher path. They never own a restaurant. Instead, they travel the world, discover rare ingredients, invent revolutionary cooking techniques, and write scientific culinary books.

Both Zois reached the same skill level, but their lives, careers, stories, and legacies are completely different.

That’s the core idea: skills shouldn’t just increase numbers—they should create unique life stories.

The newest post of Kjun mentioned that they will work on improving the skill system, although there are no details mentioned yet. I also like how in paralives, the skills intertwine with other skills and moods to level. Maybe one could add an option to your idea, if we want to professionally pursue a skill or just want to per example level fitness a little so our Zoi stays fit, but not pursue it further. In your example with the cooking, would you rather have the cooking and baking skill as one since your specialization mentioned either Restaurant- or pastry chef. Or would baker have a different branch then?

Someone mentioned something similar in the different post about those achievements. Sims 3 had somewhat is similar system which would also be cool in this game instead of reaching level 10 and be done with the whole potential of the skill
