I see that the families which come with each city have family portraits in their family bio, but player made families do not. I read somewhere that you can take the picture through the photo studio, but even then I see no way to add it to a family’s bio. Is this something that can be done? How can I do i then?

I don’t believe this is a feature yet. It might become possible after the Family Tree update that will come at some point. Not even premade family portraits change as those Zois get older or have more children, so they’re more like placeholders for now.
