One of the most immersion-breaking moments in life simulation games is meeting a Zoi in the world, getting to know them, asking about their job, or trying to move in together — only to discover they don’t have a career at all. This makes NPCs feel unfinished and breaks realism, especially during dating, friendship building, or household merging. I would love to see an automated system where most NPC Zois have a rabbit-hole career by default.
Automatic Rabbit-Hole Careers for NPCs: When you meet an NPC Zoi who is not a main, pre-authored character with a fixed story or residence, the game could automatically generate a rabbit-hole career for them the first time you ask about their job (or when they become socially relevant). This career would not require active gameplay — it would simply exist to give the Zoi a believable life and income.
Career Generation on Demand: Careers could be created dynamically when certain interactions occur, such as asking “What do you do for work?”, inviting a Zoi to move in, or progressing a relationship. Once generated, the Zoi would receive a career title, work schedule, and income amount (weekly or monthly), making them feel like a real, functioning adult in the world.
Normal, Weird, Funny, or Unemployed Careers: The randomized careers could range from very normal to quirky or humorous. Examples might include PR specialist, asset manager, office coordinator, retail associate, delivery worker, or finance assistant, but also fun or unexpected ones like trash collection specialist, exotic fruit vendor, cocktail tasting specialist, or other odd funny job titles. Sometimes the result could simply be “help me find a job” or “currently homeless looking for someone to take care of me,” adding humor, realism, and storytelling potential. But if they’re an MPC in, they’re actually like hired at a specific place then it would show up as well.
Living With or Playing as the NPC: If you later decide to move in with that Zoi or take control of them, their rabbit-hole career would already exist and continue generating income. Players could then choose to keep that career, change it, or role-play a career shift such as a midlife crisis, new passion, or fresh start.
Exclusions for Lore-Driven NPCs: Main NPCs with existing lore, fixed homes, or authored stories would be excluded from this system and retain their handcrafted roles. This keeps narrative characters intact while making background NPCs feel complete.
