Crash to desktop after character creation

  • Game Version: inZOI (current public build on Steam as of today)

  • Platform: Steam windows

  • Mods: Removed

  • Hardware Specifications & Operating System (OS version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage…): Device: ASUS ROG Ally

  • OS: Windows 11

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme

  • GPU: Integrated AMD RDNA3 (Z1 Extreme iGPU)

  • RAM: 16 GB

  • Storage: Internal SSD (plenty of free space available)

  • Issue Date: 01/25-28/26

  • Error Message: No specific error message. Game crashes to desktop.

  • Details: The game launches successfully and reaches the main menu. I can start a new game and fully create a character. The game consistently crashes immediately after clicking Complete at the end of character creation (during character → world attach). The world never loads.

    Additional details:

    • No config files are ever generated (no GameUserSettings.ini, Engine.ini, etc.)

    • Opening the Options menu crashes instantly

    • Crash is fully reproducible at the same point every time

    Troubleshooting already attempted:

    • Cleared inZOI cache and user data

    • Armoury Crate set to Turbo mode, FPS capped at 30, RSR off

    • AMD Adrenalin factory reset

    • Disabled Anti-Lag, Boost, Chill, RSR, HYPR-RX, and overlays

    • Forced 1280×720 windowed via Steam launch options

    • Verified inZOI is DX12-only

    • Multiple fresh launches

    • Tested launching docked via USB-C → HDMI external display (same crash behavior)

The crash occurs before the first successful world load and before any configuration files are written.

  1. Lowering graphics settings:
I’m unable to lower in-game graphics settings because opening the Options menu crashes instantly. The game also never generates any config files (GameUserSettings.ini, Engine.ini), so settings can’t be changed yet.

  2. RAM usage / background programs:
I’ve tested with no other programs running. System has 16 GB RAM (ROG Ally) and RAM usage is normal up until the crash. The crash happens at the same point every time (after clicking Complete in character creation).

  3. Custom / AI textures in CAZ:
No — I’ve never used mods, custom textures, or AI assets. Completely vanilla install.

  4. Graphics driver up to date:
Yes. AMD Adrenalin drivers are fully up to date and were factory-reset during troubleshooting.

  5. OS up to date:
Yes. Windows 11 is fully up to date.

Additional info:
The crash is fully reproducible and occurs immediately after character creation when the game attempts to load the world. The game launches, menus work, character creation works — but the world never loads.

Hey there, welcome to the inZOI forum!

Since you’re using the ROG Ally, I think the crashes you’re describing are happening because of the handheld’s “low” 16 GB RAM.

InZOI has terrible (V)RAM spikes throughout various of its core systems atm. We’ve discussed and even captured those in this thread: Do you have such performance spikes to when entering build/ photo / map mode?.

Create-A-Zoi is a closed off space which is why your setup can handle it. As soon as another system comes in, such as world and save file generating (including: compiling shaders, world streaming, animation blueprints, texture pools, NPC-AI-states, simulation data, etc.), your setup closes the process because it’s too much to handle all at once.
→ Most likely, the main cause is 16 GB RAM (meets requirements, but not way above) which are used by your whole setup. PC / gaming laptops and similar setups have a so-called “dedicated VRAM”, which can take a lot of spikes due to very different distribution.

Maybe we have some other users here who are using handhelds too and can offer help? Even though I assume that’s quite risky with a very rough, early access title like this.

Thanks for the detailed explanation — that actually makes a lot of sense and lines up with what I’m seeing.

The crash always happens right after character creation when the game tries to generate the world and save file, and Create-A-Zoi runs fine since it’s a closed environment. I also never see any config files generated, which fits with the idea that the process is being killed during those memory spikes.

I’m running fully vanilla (no mods), up-to-date drivers/OS, and I’ve tested both handheld and docked via USB-C → HDMI with the same result. Sounds like this is more of an early-access optimization / shared RAM issue on handhelds than something I can fix on my end right now.

Appreciate you taking the time to explain it — I’ll keep an eye out for future optimization updates.

I really hope you get to experience the game completely soon.

Please mark the reply which helped you as “solution”, so future users with the same setup and issue can find help easier  :folded_hands:
