I’ve been trying to load my save file, but the game crashes after the loading screen. My save was fine yesterday, but today, after I downloaded a mod, it started crashing. I suspected it was the mod, so I uninstalled it, but the game still crashes.
I then unsubscribed from all mods and deleted the entire Mods folder in C:\Users\Documents\inZOI\Mods. I also tried verifying the game files on Steam and even reinstalled the game, but nothing has worked so far.
Can you start a new game without the game crashing?
If you are playing a saved game from previous versions, that had mods installed, that saved game may not open correctly.
Based on your description, I understand that a mod was downloaded and the game was saved with that mod installed. This saved game now cannot be opened and the game crashes when trying to do so.
I don’t use mods.
I am guessing though, that the saved game is still referring to some mods.
Try this:
If you are familiar with using Windows File Explorer, set the options to show the file extensions.
Backup the ModInfo.json file somewhere else. Remain in the above folder.
Open the ModInfo.json file from the above folder in notepad.
Delete all contents of the file.
Add the following line in the file exactly as is with all brackets and quotation marks. All on one line, just this one line in the file.
{“ModInfo”:[]}
Save the file. Ensure that the extension is .json and that .txt extension is not added. The file should be named ModInfo.json
Repeat the above steps for all game Autosave folders if you choose to. At this point I would leave them as is in case this solution does not work. If needed later, you can then copy over the ModInfo.json file from the Autosave folder to the main save folder. However if this solution works, then repeat the steps for all the Autosave folders.
What we have done is removed the list of Mods information that the saved game refers to.
Now see if the saved game opens.
This is a workaround, and may not work. Ideally the mods list in the file should already have been removed if you have uninstalled mods.
As a best practice for every game version update,
Remove all mods from your save files and make a clean modless game save.
Uninstall all mods.
Update the game.
Start a new game without mods. Then ensure that all works.
Open the previous ‘clean saved’ game and ensure that all works.
Now add mods one at a time and test them before moving ahead.
Hi, Thank you so much for your suggestion. Yes, I’m able to start a new game without any crashing and also, I’ve tried the method you provided but it didn’t work sadly.. but I appreciate the help!
I found temporary solution for this problem in my case. Problem aren’t mods but Steam cloud.
I had same case ( in my case save game always crashed on loading save) since I’ve turn off cloud copy for saves on steam game load properly most of time. So I would look in this direction more likely.
It didn’t eliminated crashes completly but at least game is playable somehow .
In my case there is one more issue, before turn off cloud storage in steam I could not load any saves (game was crashing like in your cases all the time ), now game load but still crash at least first time fter start. Then I have to start it again and then game load properly ( i dont know why it’s like that )
Hardware Specifications & Operating System (OS version, CPU, GPU, RAM, storage…): Asus rog Zephyrus
Issue Date:
Error Message:
Details:
When trying to load a save the game crashes after the first loading screen. All the related auto saves crash too.
Other save files load perfectly and game is running well.
I tried to upload the zip file of my save but apparently it is too big, approx 200 MB. I upload a part of the save file that I guess is the save without all autosaves.
Thanks a lot for sharing! Since this is the same issue regarding Game crashes when trying to load a save, I’ve added your post to the main thread so everything stays in one place.
I’ve just put your save file in my setup and tried to playtest it. I gotta confirm, it’s not loading at all. Shuts down right during the loading screen → back to desktop.
Unless a future patch miraculously gets this save file to work (this has happened a few times before), I have to admit that it might be corrupted. You can always keep it to check whenever future updates are released. I’m really sorry for these bad news
If you have previously saved your Zois in CAZ (via any of the presets) you can of course use them again. There’s no way I know of to get them out of the corrupted file though.
I’m noticing this isn’t just an isolated issue. There are multiple reports in this thread with the same crash pattern.
In my case, the game runs fine when I start a completely new save. The problem happens when I try to load an existing save or edit builds within it. That’s when it crashes or freezes, sometimes to the point where I have to restart my entire PC. Since others are describing similar behavior, this seems like it may be related to how the game is handling older saves or edited content after the recent update, rather than just one corrupted file. It would be helpful to know if this is being looked into as a broader issue.
Crashes have been happening to numerous players since launch, but I suspect the causes for those aren’t universal. Many other players have been spared from crashes, even though their setups are very similar. Unless a shared pattern for some crashes can be determined, it’s easier to handle the crash reports separately.
